Feature Request: ChatGPT Devices + ChatGPT Wearable — A Continuous, Identity-Aware AI Ecosystem
I use ChatGPT throughout my day for planning, reminders, school, work, household questions, brainstorming, and everyday conversations. The biggest limitation I’ve noticed isn’t what ChatGPT can do—it’s that I still have to deliberately pick up my phone or sit down at my computer to access it.
I’d love to see OpenAI develop a hardware ecosystem built around continuity, rather than simply creating another smart speaker.
The Concept
Imagine ChatGPT Devices: home speakers/displays, car integration, desktop devices, and eventually a ChatGPT Wearable that all act as different access points to the same ChatGPT experience.
The important distinction would be:
The device isn’t the assistant. ChatGPT is the assistant. The device is simply the nearest way to access it.
A conversation could begin on my computer, continue through a kitchen device, move to my wearable when I leave home, continue in my car, and return to a home device later without requiring me to start over or explain the context again.
Multi-Person Voice Recognition
One of the most powerful features would be identity-aware voice recognition.
A household device could recognize who is speaking and connect that interaction with the appropriate person’s ChatGPT account and context automatically.
For example:
Person 1:
“Chat, when do I work today?”
ChatGPT:
“You work 10–3 at Taco Bell and 5–11 at Culver’s.”
Thirty seconds later, another household member could say:
Person 2:
“Chat, how do I make a pumpkin pie?”
ChatGPT:
“Start by preheating the oven…”
Same physical device. Two different people. Two completely separate ChatGPT contexts. No profile switching required.
Personal Context + Household Context
There could also be a distinction between personal information and intentionally shared household information.
For example:
“Add milk to the grocery list.”
ChatGPT recognizes who said it, but because the grocery list is designated as shared household information, everyone with permission can access it.
Meanwhile:
“What assignment was I working on earlier?”
would access only that person’s private ChatGPT context.
This could extend to shared calendars, shopping lists, chores, meal planning, household reminders, smart-home routines, and other collaborative information.
Privacy and Permissions
Privacy would obviously need to be central to this system.
Voice recognition could determine identity, while a ChatGPT Wearable or phone nearby could provide an additional authentication signal.
For sensitive information, a home device could say:
“I found that, but it’s private. I’ve sent the answer to your wearable/phone.”
Users could control exactly which information is:
- Personal/private
- Shared with specific household members
- Shared with everyone in the household
- Available to guests
This could make an AI home assistant significantly more useful without turning a shared speaker into a privacy problem.
The ChatGPT Wearable
A wearable could make the continuity especially powerful.
Instead of constantly checking a phone, ChatGPT could provide discreet reminders, quick answers, timers, schedule information, navigation, or notifications.
For example:
At my desk:
“Chat, remind me after I shower that I need to switch the laundry.”
Later, when I walk away from my computer, my wearable could quietly remind me.
The important part isn’t simply setting a reminder. It’s that ChatGPT follows the user rather than requiring the user to return to a particular device.
Seamless Device Handoff
The ideal experience would look something like this:
Computer:
“Chat, I’m done with my accounting assignment. What’s next?”
Kitchen device:
“Chat, what was I supposed to do after dinner?”
Car:
“Chat, what do I have going on when I get home?”
Wearable:
Provides a discreet medication or appointment reminder.
Bedroom device:
“Chat, where were we?”
And ChatGPT already understands the context because all of these are simply different interfaces into the same assistant.
Why This Would Be Different From Existing Smart-Home Assistants
Traditional smart assistants largely operate through individual commands:
Command → action → interaction ends.
ChatGPT could instead provide:
Conversation → context → continuity → action → continued context.
That difference is enormous.
The value wouldn’t primarily come from having a smarter speaker. It would come from having one continuous AI assistant that can move naturally among the devices in a person’s life.
The Bigger Vision
I would love to eventually see an ecosystem consisting of:
ChatGPT Account → Personal Context → Household Context → Identity/Permissions → Home Devices → Computer/Phone → Car → Wearable
The hardware itself doesn’t have to be the revolutionary part.
Continuity is the product.
Voice identity, privacy controls, shared household contexts, and seamless device handoff could turn ChatGPT from something I open when I need assistance into an assistant that is naturally accessible wherever I happen to be.
I’d buy into this ecosystem immediately.
