Feature Request: Branching Follow-Up Questions in ChatGPT

Feature Request: Branching Follow-Up Questions

When reading a long ChatGPT response, I often have a question about something in the middle. If I ask it, the answer appears at the bottom, so I have to scroll back and find where I stopped.

Could ChatGPT support branching/inline threads?

When I select a sentence and choose “Ask ChatGPT”, the follow-up question and answer could appear as an expandable thread attached to that sentence, or in a right-side panel.

This would keep the main conversation clean while allowing users to explore questions without losing their place.

Essentially: instead of one long linear conversation, allow follow-up questions to branch from specific messages or parts of a response.

This makes a lot of sense, and I think it points to a bigger problem with the way we currently use ChatGPT.

Conversations don’t behave like documents. They branch.

I can start with one question, ask something halfway through the answer, follow that rabbit hole for ten minutes, come back to the original subject, and then six months later remember one part of the discussion but have absolutely no idea which chat it was in.

So I like the idea of branching from a specific sentence or paragraph.

I’d take it one step further:

Let ChatGPT remember the relationship between the branches.

If I ask five different questions from one section of a conversation, those shouldn’t become five unrelated chats that I have to find later. They are all part of the same piece of thinking.

Ideally I should be able to say:

“Show me everything we’ve explored from this point.”

That would give us a conversation that behaves more like a map of ideas than a very long scroll.

The irony is that we’re asking AI to help us think, while still making us behave like librarians afterwards.

I’d happily retire from the filing department.
