I use Projects and ChatGPT Work for long-running research and software-engineering tasks. I would like to propose three related context-management improvements.
- Explicit references to Project conversations
Projects can implicitly use context from other conversations, but users cannot reliably specify which previous conversation should be consulted.
Please add stable conversation references within a Project, such as:
@conversation-name
or a permanent conversation identifier/link that can be inserted into a prompt.
This would provide deterministic retrieval and provenance without requiring users to copy and paste an earlier conversation.
- Bring normal Chat’s edit-and-regenerate functionality to Work
Normal ChatGPT conversations already allow users to edit an earlier prompt and regenerate the conversation from that point. However, this functionality is unavailable in ChatGPT Work.
Please bring the same capability to Work conversations.
For example, if a Work conversation contains:
A → B → C → D → E
the user should be able to edit B and generate a new continuation:
A → B′ → C′ → D′
This is especially important in Work because these conversations are often long-running and accumulate many intermediate steps. Editing an earlier prompt is useful not only for correcting it, but also for pruning obsolete reasoning, failed approaches, and irrelevant context that would otherwise continue influencing later work.
- Choose Chat or Work when branching
A branch created from a Work conversation currently remains in Work. Please let users choose its destination:
-
Another Work session
-
A normal ChatGPT conversation
Small conceptual questions frequently emerge during larger Work tasks but do not belong in the persistent workspace. A normal-chat branch could inherit the conversation up to the branching point while excluding workspace files or permissions unless the user explicitly includes them.
