Feature Request: Automatically Add Dates to Chat Titles

Suggested feature: Allow users to automatically include the conversation date in ChatGPT chat titles.

For example, instead of:

Compliance Interview Preparation

ChatGPT could automatically generate:

2026.09.12 | Compliance Interview Preparation

or:

Compliance Interview Preparation | 2026.09.12

Why this would be useful

For users who have been using ChatGPT for a long time, the number of conversations can become very large. The current chat title helps identify the topic, but it does not make it easy to tell when the conversation took place.

This becomes especially useful when I have multiple conversations about the same topic over different periods. Adding the date would make it much easier to distinguish, organize, and revisit previous conversations.

Suggested options

It would be great if users could choose their preferred title format in Settings:

  • AI-generated title only

  • YYYY.MM.DD | Topic

  • Topic | YYYY.MM.DD

  • MM/DD | Topic

  • Custom format

It would also be helpful to have an option to apply the selected format to existing chats, not just new conversations.

This may seem like a small UI improvement, but for long-term users who have hundreds or thousands of conversations, it could make chat history significantly easier to organize and navigate.

Thank you for considering this feature!

Adding my experience because this would make a significant difference for people who use ChatGPT as an ongoing workspace rather than for isolated questions.

I have a large number of conversations, including recurring types of chats such as daily/weekly intake conversations. The automatically generated title often reflects one particular topic mentioned in the conversation rather than the overall purpose of the chat, which makes it difficult to recognize and retrieve later.

I currently find a date + meaningful conversation type/topic much more useful, for example:

26.09.28 Intake – Weekly Priorities + Open Loops

A setting that allowed users to choose a consistent naming format would be extremely helpful. Ideally this could include:

  • an automatically inserted conversation date
  • a title based on the overall purpose of the conversation rather than one incidental topic
  • a user-defined date/title format

For long-term users with hundreds of conversations, chat titles become part of the organizational system rather than just a cosmetic label.

Dear OpenAI Team,

I would like to propose a small but valuable improvement to ChatGPT: an optional setting that automatically adds a date and time timestamp to every new conversation title.

The problem

For users who have hundreds or thousands of conversations, automatically generated titles are helpful but often insufficient.

When multiple conversations cover similar topics, it becomes difficult to identify when a particular discussion started without opening it.

Proposed solution

Introduce a simple option under ChatGPT Settings, such as:

Automatically include creation date and time in conversation titles

Users could choose between several formats:

  • 16.10.2026 12:05:30 – Conversation Title

  • 2026-10-16 12:05 – Conversation Title

  • Conversation Title – 2026-10-16

  • Standard titles without timestamps (current behavior)

Ideally, users could customize the timestamp format, including whether to display seconds.

The timestamp should represent the original creation time, remain unchanged when the conversation continues, and be preserved when the page is refreshed or the conversation is accessed from another device.

The feature should be entirely optional and disabled by default.

A working proof of concept

This is not merely a theoretical suggestion.

With ChatGPT’s assistance, I developed and successfully tested two Tampermonkey userscripts that automatically add timestamps to conversation titles:

Desktop implementation

  • Platform: Windows 11 / Google Chrome

  • Userscript version: 2.9

  • Result: automatic timestamp insertion without manual intervention

Mobile implementation

  • Platform: Android / Mozilla Firefox

  • Userscript version: 3.3.13

  • Result: automatic timestamp insertion, no unwanted sidebar opening, and timestamp preservation after refreshing the page

The mobile version was successfully verified on October 16, 2026.

Both implementations demonstrate that users can benefit from this functionality today, although browser-specific workarounds are less reliable than a native implementation.

Why a native feature would be better

A built-in solution could offer:

  • Consistent behavior across web, desktop, and mobile applications

  • No dependency on browser extensions or userscripts

  • Permanent preservation of timestamps in conversation metadata

  • Better organization of conversation history

  • Improved accessibility for users maintaining long-term projects, research notes, technical discussions, or learning records

Final suggestion

This feature does not need to change the experience of users who prefer the current interface.

A simple optional switch would be sufficient.

I believe this relatively small improvement could provide substantial everyday value to many long-term ChatGPT users.

I would be happy to provide additional implementation details or the tested userscripts if they would be useful.

Thank you for considering this suggestion.
