Feature Request: Annotated Chat History with Index Markers, comments and highlights

Allow users to create custom markers or annotations within a chat session, with optional headings or notes. These markers would generate a clickable index for easy navigation within long conversations. Option for tagging a marker as global for inclusion in a global index accessed from the main menu in the ChatGPT app.

Key Functions:
1. Set Marker — Right-click or tap a message to “Add Marker” with an optional heading or comment.
2. Auto-Generated Index — Display an index sidebar or collapsible panel with links to all markers in the chat.
3. Global Marker Option — Allow some markers to be promoted to a Global Index, accessible from the main ChatGPT interface (e.g. “My Markers” in sidebar).
4. Searchable & Filterable — Enable searching within markers by keyword or tag.
5. Export-Friendly — Preserve markers and annotations when exporting chat sessions (PDF, DOCX, etc.).
6. Share marker - similar to sharing the chat, but using the link opens the chat at the marker of interest.
7. Highlight - Ability to highlight (change foreground/background) any text within the chat with different colours.

Use Case:
• Efficiently navigate long research or project conversations.
• Build reusable knowledge bases with section-level granularity.
• Mark key decisions, instructions, or resolved issues for future reference.

Hi @TemporarilyJosh, good post here. I agree with you on the need for those features. For requests numbers 2 and 3, I have implemented a solution that you can find here.

The other options you mention could be a good enhancement  noted!

If you want to play around with the tool and provide feedback would be awesome
Thanks for your help. Hope it helps
