It’d be great if users could edit ChatGPT’s responses, similar to how users can currently edit their own prompts.
Why This Feature Would Be Useful:
-
Controlled Refinement – Users could tweak ChatGPT’s answers for clarity, conciseness, tone, or accuracy nudging the conversation in the right direction without having to explain changes in follow-up prompts (which can derail the flow).
-
Partial Response Preservation – Rather than regenerating an entire response by editing the user’s earlier prompt, users could modify or cut segments while keeping the good parts.
-
Enhanced Control Possibilities - PARTIAL REGENERATION – users could modify specific sections and have ChatGPT continue from that point, or have ChatGPT rewrite the whole edited response to guarantee “understanding.”
How It Might Work:
• Users could click an “Edit Response” button, similar to how they edit their own prompts.
• This would create a branch (X/Y thread) of the conversation, maintaining context while allowing modifications, and indicating the users’ intervention.
• Users have the option to hit “continue generation” if they want ChatGPT to pick up where the edit left off and complete the prompt (if applicable to the edit).
• ChatGPT could also either accept the edited response as is or rewrite it based on its own understanding when integrating the changes before continuing the conversation.
• Obviously some UI indication of the general or exact user modification would likely be presented and be preserved.
