Feature request: Allow users to change or archive the Default Project

It would be very useful if OpenAI allowed organization owners to either:

  1. designate another existing project as the organization’s Default Project, or
  2. archive the original Default Project after selecting a replacement.

At the moment, the automatically created Default Project appears to be permanent: it cannot be archived, deleted, or replaced by another project.

This becomes awkward once an organization has established its actual project structure. For example, I now have a properly named project that I use for my API work, while the original “Default project” is no longer needed. I would ideally like to make the active project the new default and archive the unused one.

The current behavior creates a permanently visible project that may have no functional purpose anymore. It also makes project management feel less clean, particularly for small organizations where there may only be one real production project.

A possible implementation could be:

  • Require every organization to always have exactly one Default Project.
  • Allow an organization owner to select “Make default” on another active project.
  • Automatically transfer the default designation.
  • Allow the previous Default Project to then be archived.
  • Preserve all historical usage and billing records regardless of archival status.

This would maintain the existing requirement that an organization always has a default project, while giving users control over which project fulfills that role.

Would this be something the Platform team would consider?
