First off—I love what you’re building here.
The new Projects + Canvas setup has the potential to become a true second brain. ChatGPT has been my second brain for some time now, and now that I finally have access to Projects, it’s become the space where I organize long-term, complex creative work—something I rely on daily.
But I’m running into serious friction that makes it hard to stay organized, especially as someone working across both desktop and mobile.
The Big Issue
There’s no way to delete or move documents created by the system (Canvas docs) once they’re created.
These aren’t files I’ve uploaded—they’re the documents automatically generated during chats or through the Canvas editor. They pile up fast, and I can’t get rid of them.
This creates:
- Clutter I can’t clear
- Confusion, especially when GPT tries to generate a doc with the same name again
- A total lack of control over my workspace (though I understand there’s a learning curve, and I’m not claiming to be an expert)
Platform-Switching Workarounds
Right now, I’m switching between desktop and mobile just to access basic functions:
- On mobile, I can rename project chats by long-pressing in the project overview
- On desktop, I haven’t found a way to rename chats at all
- And neither platform lets me delete or move Canvas-created docs
This isn’t about a preference for multi-device use—it’s a workaround born of necessity, because each platform has features the other is missing.
Workaround: Trash Heap (aka Screaming into the Void)
I initially created a workaround thread I called “Trash Heap,” thinking I could move Canvas docs into it. Turns out, that’s not possible either.
Now it’s just where I go to scream, vent, and dump ideas that have nowhere else to go.
It’s become a graveyard for the organizational tools I wish I had access to.
I’m not asking for perfection—just baseline functionality:
- Let us delete system-created (Canvas) docs
- Let us move or archive them to other chats or folders
- Provide clear terminology—users shouldn’t have to guess what’s system-generated vs. user-uploaded
- Clarify and synchronize feature parity between mobile and desktop where possible
I understand that UI differences exist—mobile can’t replicate everything a full desktop experience can. That’s fair. But core functionality like doc deletion or renaming shouldn’t be platform-exclusive.
And for the record: I can rename most things—just not on desktop, and not without switching to my phone. It shouldn’t be that complex.
