Feature Proposal: Consent-Based Shared Context Between ChatGPT Users
I’d like to suggest a feature that could make ChatGPT significantly more useful for couples, families, friends, teams, businesses, and people working on shared goals.
The concept
Allow two or more ChatGPT users to create an optional, consent-based connection between their accounts.
Each user would keep their own private conversations, memories, and personal context. However, users could intentionally share specific messages, information, or pieces of context with another person’s ChatGPT.
For example:
“Share this project context with Sarah’s ChatGPT.”
Before anything is transferred, ChatGPT would clearly show what information is about to be shared and require confirmation.
Privacy should be fundamental
This would not mean merging accounts or giving users access to each other’s private chat histories.
Instead:
- Users must explicitly opt in to sharing.
- Only specifically selected information or context can be shared.
- ChatGPT asks for confirmation before transferring information.
- Private memories remain private unless deliberately shared.
- Users can revoke or disconnect the connection at any time.
- Users can view and manage what information has been shared.
- Being connected should never automatically make private conversations accessible.
Personal and relationship use cases
This could be particularly useful for:
- Couples and relationship planning
- Families
- Shared travel and household planning
- Studying and learning together
- Personal projects
- Long-term goals and decision-making
For example, two partners could each continue using their own ChatGPT privately while intentionally creating a shared layer of context about their relationship, travel plans, finances, or future goals.
Business and team use cases
The same concept could be extremely valuable for professional collaboration.
Imagine two employees working on the same project, each using their own ChatGPT account.
Instead of copying and pasting context manually, one employee could intentionally share a specific project brief, meeting summary, decision, or approved piece of information with another employee’s ChatGPT.
For example:
“Share the approved project context with Sarah’s ChatGPT.”
Sarah’s ChatGPT could then understand that context without gaining access to the sender’s private conversations or personal memories.
This could support:
- Project collaboration
- Meeting and decision sharing
- Team onboarding
- Research collaboration
- Cross-functional work
- Shared documentation and planning
- Client or account management
- Business workflows involving multiple AI-assisted employees
For organizations, this could potentially be extended into permission-based shared AI context, where administrators can define what types of information can be shared between team members while maintaining individual privacy.
A possible structure
The feature could support different levels of sharing, such as:
Personal → Couple/Family → Team → Organization
Each level could have its own permissions, visibility, and privacy controls.
The key idea is that this would not be shared memory by default. It would be shared context created intentionally by the people involved.
The principle could be:
Private by default. Shared by choice. Transparent at every step.
I believe this could be a natural extension of ChatGPT’s memory and personalization capabilities — allowing multiple independent AI assistants to collaborate through a context layer that the users themselves control.
It could bridge the gap between personal AI assistants and collaborative AI, without requiring people to sacrifice the privacy of their individual ChatGPT experiences.
I’d love to see this considered as a future ChatGPT feature.
