Feature Proposal: A Standalone Anime Roleplay & Interactive Storytelling App

TL;DR

A standalone OpenAI app dedicated to anime roleplay and interactive storytelling.

Designed for users who want long-running character-driven stories rather than general-purpose ChatGPT conversations.

Support multiple AI characters with distinct personalities, memories, relationships, and knowledge.

Let the user fully control their own character; AI should not decide the user’s dialogue, thoughts, actions, or choices.

Maintain persistent story/world state across long conversations.

Reduce repetitive AI loops and encourage meaningful story progression.

Provide world-building, character creation, relationship, and story-management tools.

Include strong safety and content controls appropriate for different users.

Feature Proposal: A Standalone Anime Roleplay & Interactive Storytelling App

The idea

I would like to suggest that OpenAI consider creating a separate standalone app dedicated to anime roleplay and interactive storytelling, rather than trying to add a full roleplay system directly into the main ChatGPT experience.

ChatGPT is already a very capable general-purpose AI. However, long-form roleplay and multi-character storytelling have very different requirements from normal conversations, learning, research, or productivity.

A dedicated app could provide a much more focused experience while keeping the main ChatGPT product clean and versatile.

Who is it for?

The app could be designed for users who enjoy:

- Anime and fantasy roleplay

- Interactive storytelling

- Creating original characters

- Long-running fictional worlds

- Multi-character conversations

- Collaborative storytelling with AI

- Exploring different story routes and relationships

The goal would not be to replace ChatGPT. It would be a specialized creative environment built on OpenAI’s AI capabilities.

Why a separate app?

A dedicated app could have its own interface and systems designed specifically for storytelling.

Instead of adding many roleplay-specific settings to the main ChatGPT interface, the separate app could focus on:

- Character creation

- World building

- Story state

- Character relationships

- Long-term memory

- Multi-character dialogue

- Story events

- Character discovery

- Sharing and discovering user-created characters/worlds

This separation could allow OpenAI to optimize the roleplay experience without making the main ChatGPT interface more complicated for users who do not use roleplay.

Must-have features

1. Multi-character conversations

Users should be able to create several AI characters who can participate in the same story.

Each character should have:

- Their own personality

- Their own memories

- Their own relationships

- Their own knowledge

- Their own speaking style

- Their own goals and motivations

Characters should not randomly merge personalities or speak as if they are the same person.

2. Strong user-character control

One of the most important rules should be:

The AI should not control the user’s character unless the user explicitly allows it.

The AI can control NPCs and AI characters, describe the environment, and react to the user’s actions.

But it should not automatically write:

- The user’s dialogue

- The user’s thoughts

- The user’s decisions

- The user’s actions

This would make the experience feel much more like genuine interactive roleplay instead of the AI writing the user’s part of the story.

3. Persistent story state

Long stories need more than ordinary chat history.

The app could maintain structured story information such as:

- Current location

- Important events

- Character relationships

- Character knowledge

- Unresolved mysteries

- Current objectives

- World rules

- Important items

- Story progression

This would help prevent long-running stories from gradually becoming inconsistent.

4. Anti-loop behavior

A major problem in AI roleplay is repetitive dialogue.

For example, a character may repeatedly produce almost the same reaction after every user message.

The dedicated app could include systems specifically designed to detect and reduce:

- Repeated sentences

- Repeated reactions

- Repeated emotional responses

- Stagnant conversations

- Characters repeatedly asking the same question

- Stories that stop progressing

The AI should prioritize continuing the story instead of endlessly repeating the same reaction.

5. World-building tools

Users should be able to define their own worlds without needing to write complicated prompts.

For example:

World

- Era

- Locations

- Factions

- Magic/ability systems

- Rules

- History

Characters

- Personality

- Appearance

- Abilities

- Relationships

- Memories

- Goals

Story

- Current situation

- Opening scene

- Main objectives

- Important events

The app could then use these structured elements as persistent story context.

6. Safety and content controls

A dedicated roleplay application should still have strong safety systems.

Users should have clear controls for the type of stories they want to create, while OpenAI’s existing safety requirements remain in place.

The system should also make it clear what types of content are allowed and provide appropriate safeguards rather than leaving users to guess what is permitted.

7. Character discovery and sharing

A dedicated ecosystem could allow users to:

- Publish original characters

- Discover characters created by others

- Share worlds

- Share story settings

- Follow creators

- Save favorite characters

- Start a new story using a shared character

This could create a creative community around AI storytelling.

Example experience

A user could open the app and create:

«World: A modern academy where supernatural abilities exist.»

Then create:

«Character 1: A calm time-manipulation student.

Character 2: A confident spatial-manipulation student.

Character 3: A mysterious student with a sealed ability.»

The user creates their own player character and starts at the academy entrance examination.

The AI controls the world and the AI characters.

The user controls their own character.

The story then develops naturally through the interaction.

The important part is that the AI is not simply generating isolated replies. It is maintaining a persistent fictional world and its characters over time.

Why I think this could be valuable

ChatGPT already demonstrates that OpenAI has very strong conversational and reasoning capabilities.

A dedicated roleplay product could take those capabilities and organize them around a different goal: long-term interactive storytelling.

Rather than making ChatGPT itself increasingly complicated, a separate app could provide a focused experience for people who specifically want this type of interaction.

The main ChatGPT app could remain the general-purpose AI assistant.

The new application could become a dedicated creative space for stories, characters, worlds, and roleplay.

Final suggestion

I am not suggesting that OpenAI should simply add an “Anime Mode” button to ChatGPT.

I think a standalone OpenAI application for interactive storytelling and anime roleplay could be a much cleaner approach.

It could combine OpenAI’s existing AI capabilities with purpose-built systems for:

Characters + Memory + World Building + Story State + User Control + Safety + Discovery

That combination could create a completely different kind of AI experience while keeping the main ChatGPT product focused on its broader purpose.

Thank you for considering the idea.
