Hi OpenAI Product Team,
I have a feature idea that I genuinely think would make ChatGPT way better, especially for people who use it to learn.
Please let us highlight parts of ChatGPT responses.
Not just normal highlighting either. I’m imagining being able to select a sentence or paragraph, give it a color, and immediately choose something like:
“Explain this more.”
“Say this in simpler language.”
“Go deeper.”
“Save this.”
“I have a question specifically about this.”
Different highlight colors could also mean different things. Yellow could mean “I need more context,” green could mean “important,” blue could mean “remember this,” etc.
I thought of it while having a long conversation about evolution and realizing I kept wanting more context on very specific parts of the response. Copying and pasting every section back into the chat works, but it interrupts the flow and is honestly kind of annoying.
It would be amazing if highlighted sections could create little contextual follow-ups while keeping the main conversation intact.
I could see this being incredibly useful for school, studying, research, tutoring, complicated explanations, and basically anyone who has ever read a long ChatGPT answer and thought, “Wait, go back to THAT sentence.”
So I am officially submitting my tiny contribution to the future of ChatGPT. ![]()
And if this ever becomes a feature, I am respectfully requesting:
- Lifetime ChatGPT Plus.
- A recurring emotional-support royalty.
- Maybe enough money to at least beat poverty because help a girl out, product team.

Jokes aside, I really do think this would be an extremely useful feature, and I hope someone considers it.
Edit: Adding one more extension to this idea: the highlighting system could also work as an annotation/review layer while reading a long response. Users could assign different colors or labels to highlights, such as “define this word,” “explain this more,” “important,” or “come back to this topic later,” then keep reading without interrupting the main conversation.
At the end, there could be a “Review my highlights” option that recaps everything the user marked — defining vocabulary, summarizing important points, surfacing confusing sections, and collecting topics for deeper follow-up.
I think this would make long ChatGPT responses much more useful for studying and learning because users could process information in their own way without constantly breaking the flow of the conversation.
