Feature idea: Finding like-minded people through ChatGPT
I would love to see an optional feature that helps ChatGPT users find communities or discussion groups based on their inner interests, imagination, and way of experiencing the world.
This would not need to be a dating app or a conventional social network based on photos, location, age, favorite films, or other standard profile information. It could function more like a global collection of interest-based discussion circles, where people are connected by the structure of their inner lives and ways of thinking.
For example, there are people who:
- create detailed fantasy worlds in their imagination while listening to music;
- imagine themselves as characters in fictional or alternative realities;
- develop recurring inner worlds, stories, identities, or scenarios;
- experience music visually, through colors, shapes, scenes, or movement;
- have vivid dreams or are interested in lucid dreaming;
- enjoy philosophical, existential, speculative, or metaphysical discussions;
- feel that their internal life is unusually rich but rarely meet people who experience something similar.
These are relatively specific forms of experience. They are not simply broad interests such as “likes fantasy” or “likes music.” Two people might enjoy completely different books and films, yet have very similar ways of imagining, feeling, and mentally experiencing music or fictional worlds.
A user could voluntarily select broad categories such as:
- “I build inner fantasy worlds.”
- “Music causes vivid visual scenes or stories.”
- “I imagine myself as a character in another reality.”
- “I experience music as colors or shapes.”
- “I am interested in dreams and consciousness.”
- “I want to discuss unusual inner experiences with like-minded people.”
They could then choose whether to receive suggestions for relevant communities, join themed discussion groups, allow people with similar selected interests to contact them, or remain anonymous under a nickname. They should also be able to remove their profile or disable matching at any time.
No private conversations would need to be revealed. ChatGPT would not have to tell anyone what a particular user discussed. The matching could be based only on a broad, anonymized, user-approved profile of interests and experiences, similar to selecting tags but more nuanced and meaningful.
Additional context: I am not suggesting that ChatGPT should expose personal conversations or classify people based on sensitive information. The idea is closer to a voluntary “circle of interests” system. A person could simply say, “I want to find people who also create fantasy worlds while listening to music,” or “Show me people who experience music as colors,” and choose whether they want to be discoverable by others with similar interests.
The feature could include clear boundaries and moderation. People with similar inner experiences will not necessarily get along, and some topics may require careful handling. The goal would not be to diagnose or medically categorize anyone, but to help people find others who understand a particular type of imagination or perception.
I think this could address a real social need. Many people have rich internal worlds but do not have an easy way to find others who experience something similar. ChatGPT already acts as a conversational space for these subjects, so it could potentially become a bridge between people who otherwise might never find one another.
In short, this would be less like Tinder and more like a global community of people connected by their imagination, inner experience, and way of thinking rather than only by their external identity or conventional hobbies.
