Faster Chat Deletion with Shift + Hover (Discord-style Quick Delete)

Many ChatGPT users end up with hundreds of conversations because it’s common to start a new chat instead of continuing an old one. Managing these chats becomes time-consuming since deleting a conversation currently requires multiple clicks and a confirmation dialog every time.

Proposed Solution

Introduce a quick delete shortcut inspired by Discord:

  • Hover over a conversation in the sidebar.
  • Hold the Shift key.
  • A Delete button appears in place of the usual menu.
  • Clicking it instantly deletes the chat without showing a confirmation dialog.

This would be an intentional shortcut since it only appears while holding Shift, making accidental deletions unlikely while significantly speeding up cleanup.

Benefits

  • :high_voltage: Much faster for users with large chat histories.
  • :computer_mouse: Reduces the number of clicks required.
  • :bullseye: Easy to discover for power users.
  • :speech_balloon: Similar interaction pattern to Discord, so it feels familiar.
  • :broom: Makes sidebar management much more efficient.

Optional Enhancement

Users who prefer extra safety could enable or disable “Skip delete confirmation when using Shift + Delete” in Settings.

Hey @amhirdaykapil, welcome to the community!

I can see how the current delete flow starts to feel slow once someone has hundreds of conversations to sort through.

Your Shift shortcut idea gives people a faster path without putting accidental deletion front and center. Users who want the extra speed could turn off the confirmation, while everyone else could keep the safer default.

It is also a different angle on the broader feedback we have seen around making large chat histories easier to manage.

I cannot promise when or whether this will be added, but I will share the idea internally.
