Extreme lag on ChatGPT Desktop App (v26.924) with 8th Gen Intel Laptop — High CPU Usage

Ever since the ChatGPT Desktop App updated to version 26.924, I have been experiencing severe lag while using it on my work laptop. The entire app feels incredibly sluggish.

Common issues include:

  • Typing in Chat: When using the Chinese Input Method (IME) in the chat window, the CPU usage spikes and causes constant stuttering.
  • UI Switching: Opening the right sidebar causes massive lag and choppy mouse movement. Interacting with elements inside the sidebar drives CPU usage up, leading to further freezing.
  • Multi-session Conversions: Running two chat sessions simultaneously slows the app down to a nearly unusable state.

My work laptop specs are a bit outdated: DELL i7-8550U / DDR4-2400 8GB / PCIe Gen 3 500GB SSD. However, everything ran quite smoothly on version 26.917. Stuttering was rare, handling two concurrent sessions was completely fine, the right sidebar didn’t lag (except when opening web links), and typing with the Chinese IME had minimal delay.

From what I can see, the main difference between 26.917 and 26.924 is the UI layout design; the features seem identical. I don’t understand why the app uses very little RAM but consumes so much CPU.

Are there any settings or tweaks I can adjust to reduce this lag on version 26.924? Also, I really hope the official dev team can optimize this UI-related CPU spike issue. Thanks in advance for any advice!
