ChatGPT should receive a small amount of trusted, privacy-preserving client metadata as part of the current session context.

For example:

- Client: ChatGPT for iOS / Android / macOS / Windows / Web
- Client version/build
- OS and OS version, where appropriate
- Current ChatGPT product surface or interface

**Why this would be useful**

When users ask ChatGPT questions about ChatGPT itself, troubleshooting, settings, feature availability, or interface behavior, the assistant currently may not know which client or version the user is running.

This creates unnecessary back-and-forth. The application already knows this information, but the user may still have to manually tell ChatGPT things like:

“I’m using the iOS app, version X.”

If the assistant had access to a limited, trusted set of session metadata, it could:

- Give instructions that match the user’s actual interface.
- Know whether a feature should exist in the installed version.
- Distinguish client-version differences from account rollouts or model availability.
- Troubleshoot client-specific bugs more accurately.
- Avoid asking users for information the application already has.
- Give more precise product-support answers.

**Privacy**

This does not require exposing sensitive device information.

There is no need to provide things such as device identifiers, IP addresses, serial numbers, or precise location.

A minimal context object containing only the client type, app version, OS/platform, and relevant product surface would be sufficient.

Ideally, this metadata would be provided to ChatGPT as trusted system/session context rather than as user-authored text, so the assistant could reliably distinguish it from information entered in the conversation.

**Example**

Instead of ChatGPT saying:

“Are you using ChatGPT on iOS, Android, desktop, or the web?”

it could already know:

Client: ChatGPT for iOS
Version: 1.2026.xxx
Platform: iOS
Surface: Mobile app

This seems like a relatively small addition that could substantially improve troubleshooting, product guidance, and conversations about ChatGPT itself.
