I suggest enhancing the current ChatGPT sidebar by allowing each chat to have an expandable sub-tree structure, similar to folders or document outlines.
Right now, the sidebar only lists the chat sessions we started. But inside long chats, it’s hard to navigate.
My idea:
- Each chat in the sidebar could be expanded to show a list of the main questions or prompts we asked inside that chat.
- Clicking on any of these items would jump directly to that part of the conversation.
- This would make long chats much easier to browse, like navigating sections in a document.
Optional extras:
- Allow users to rename or bookmark their own important points in the chat
- Search within the sub-tree to find a specific question
- Collapse/expand the tree to keep the sidebar organized
This would be a huge improvement in user experience, especially for people using ChatGPT for deep projects, coding, research, and multi-step tasks.
