Currently, files uploaded and attached to Custom GPTs for training or customization are not accessible for download once uploaded. This limitation creates challenges for users who may need to review, update, or reuse these files in other contexts.
Feature Request:
I propose adding a feature that allows users to download files attached to Custom GPTs. This capability should include:
A download option for each attached file within the Custom GPT settings.
Appropriate permissions to ensure only the creator or authorized users can access these downloads.
Use Case:
A team member may need to verify or update the content of an attached file but no longer has access to the original source file.
Files attached to a Custom GPT may need to be reused for similar projects or transferred to another environment.
Suggested Implementation:
Add a “Download” button next to each file in the Custom GPT configuration interface.
Implement user-level access control to ensure only authorized users can download the files.
This feature would improve the flexibility, transparency, and usability of Custom GPTs, especially in collaborative or iterative workflows.
Fully agree with this request — definitely needs to be prioritized.
We’ve run into this exact problem building Custom GPTs for business use. Once files are uploaded, they basically vanish into a black hole. If we need to iterate, reference, or even confirm what version of a document we uploaded, there’s zero visibility. It’s a serious issue for anyone treating Custom GPTs as part of an actual workflow, not just a toy experiment.
In our case, we’re running multiple client-facing GPTs and having to track training files manually outside the platform (Google Drive + internal notes) just to stay sane. It’s clunky and totally avoidable. A simple download button with permissions control would fix this cleanly.
Big +1 from me — and I know a lot of teams would benefit from this.
Team Collaboration / File Recovery
If a team member leaves the project or we lose track of the original source file, we’re locked out of our own training materials. Download access is essential for continuity.
Reusability Across Projects
We build multiple GPTs for related use cases. Without being able to download existing files, we’re forced to maintain external copies and duplicate work.
Scaling Operations
As we scale our GPT usage across multiple clients, the inability to retrieve and reuse files directly from the platform creates avoidable bottlenecks.
