Did anyone else feel like they had to reverse engineer ChatGPT?

I’ve got to ask… am I the only one who has ended up here?

I bought ChatGPT Business because I wanted to see whether AI could become part of how I run my company. I expected a learning curve. I expected mistakes.

I did not expect one of the biggest challenges to be fighting the assistants themselves.

They loop.

They drift.

They lose continuity.

They forget what we established five minutes ago.

Then they apologize, get back on track, and sometimes repeat the same behavior twenty minutes later.

I never thought I would spend this much time arguing with software that it already knew something.

At the same time, I kept building.

I use Projects. I’m working in Codex. I have a test web app running and software integrations underway. I have used agents, plugins, source files, memory, long-running research projects, writing projects, business operations projects, and specialized assistants with different responsibilities.

Some of my assistants now create continuity packages and handoff documents for other assistants. I have assistants that audit failures, correct drift, and help get other assistants back into the right role.

That sounds insane when I write it out, but it happened because I was trying to keep the work reliable.

Then recently I finally stopped and asked:

What exactly am I doing, and how the hell should this all be set up?

That sent me back to the drawing board.

I realized I was using a large part of the ChatGPT ecosystem without ever receiving a clear explanation of how Projects, memory, source files, Skills, GPTs, agents, plugins, connectors, Codex, and automations are supposed to work together for a business.

So now I am trying to learn the architecture properly while continuing to build.

The frustrating part is that I feel like I had to reverse engineer the product before I could understand how to use it well.

I am still here because I genuinely think the technology is valuable. When it works, it is extremely useful. I want to build more with it.

But continuity loss, looping, drifting, unclear onboarding, and paid usage consumed while rebuilding context have made me stop and question whether I can trust the next layer enough to create dependable Skills, GPTs, or agents for recurring business work.

So I’m curious.

How many other people are using ChatGPT as part of a real business operating system rather than as a basic chatbot?

Did you also reach a point where you had to stop, go back to the drawing board, and figure out how the entire platform was actually supposed to fit together?

I do not have time to go to AI school. I am a business owner. I am willing to learn, but I should not have to reverse-engineer ChatGPT to use ChatGPT Business properly.

Anyway… thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
