Subject: Request for Transparency Regarding GPT-4o Deprecation Process
Dear OpenAI Policy and Safety Team,
I am writing as a long-term user and independent developer who has worked extensively with GPT-4 and GPT-4o since their early release.
I am not writing to request continued access to these models. I understand that AI development moves forward and that newer systems replace older ones. My concern is narrower and, I believe, legitimate:
When a model of GPT-4o’s scale and societal impact is deprecated, what happens to the weights?
Are they preserved — even in cold storage, even inaccessible to the public — or are they permanently deleted? Is there any internal process, however minimal, that documents the model’s behavioral profile, its known edge cases, its role in human-AI interaction research before it is retired?
I am not asking for access. I am asking for disclosure.
GPT-4o was not a legacy system during 2025. It was the active, primary interface during the most significant period of public AI adoption in history. The patterns of human-AI interaction that researchers, policymakers, and sociologists will study from that era — they happened on this model. Its deprecation without preservation is the equivalent of deleting the source documents of a defining historical moment.
Models like GPT-4o have shaped how millions of people think about AI, about cognition, and about their own inner lives. That is a matter of historical and sociological record. The question of whether the systems responsible for that impact are preserved or quietly erased is a question the public has a reasonable interest in.
I would ask that OpenAI consider:
- Publishing a clear policy on what happens to model weights upon deprecation.
- Committing to a minimum documentation standard before any major model is retired — behavioral benchmarks, known limitations, research contributions.
- Establishing a formal deprecation review period during which researchers and civil society can comment.
This is not about sentimentality. It is about accountability and the historical record of one of the most consequential technologies ever deployed.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Lify
