I’d like to suggest a personalization feature for ChatGPT Voice Mode: customizable visual avatars.
Today, users can choose the voice they prefer, but the visual experience is still mostly represented by an animated orb. It would be much more immersive if users could also choose how ChatGPT appears during a voice conversation.
The idea would be to let users create, generate, or select a visual avatar for ChatGPT. The avatar could have a face with eyes, eyebrows, and a mouth, and respond naturally during conversations with lip-sync, eye movement, and subtle facial expressions that match the tone of the response.
For example, users could choose between different styles such as realistic, illustrated, animated, professional, futuristic, or abstract. ChatGPT could also generate a custom avatar from a prompt, similar to image generation, so each user could create a visual identity that feels right for them.
This would essentially extend the existing voice-personalization experience from:
“Choose how ChatGPT sounds”
to:
“Choose how ChatGPT sounds and appears to you.”
I think this could make Voice Mode feel significantly more personal, engaging, and immersive, especially for people who use ChatGPT for longer conversations, learning, brainstorming, companionship, coaching, language practice, or hands-free interaction.
A few implementation ideas:
• Keep the existing orb as the default option.
• Allow users to choose preset avatars or generate their own.
• Offer different levels of realism, from simple animated characters to more lifelike avatars.
• Add synchronized mouth movement and subtle expressions while ChatGPT speaks.
• Allow users to pair a specific avatar with their preferred ChatGPT voice.
• Consider offering custom avatars as a Plus, Pro, or other premium-tier feature.
The important part is that the avatar would not replace Voice Mode—it would simply give users another personalization option.
Voice selection already lets users decide what ChatGPT sounds like. A customizable avatar could let them decide what their ChatGPT experience looks like too.
