Could voice commands unlock ChatGPT avatars in VR and AR?

Feature Request: Optional AI Avatar Mode for ChatGPT Voice

Hello OpenAI team,

I would like to suggest an optional new way to experience ChatGPT Voice: an interactive AI avatar that could gradually transform the current voice interface into a visual presence.

I really like the simplicity of the current voice interface and the blue orb. I don’t think it should be replaced. Instead, I imagine giving users the option to transform that orb into an avatar when they want a more immersive experience.

How it could work

The conversation could start exactly as it does today, with the blue orb.

If the user says something like:

  • “Activate avatar mode.”
  • “Show yourself.”
  • “Become full body.”
  • “Return to the orb.”

the interface could transition between different representations.

The avatar could potentially respond to simple voice commands such as:

  • “Make yourself my height.”
  • “Make yourself smaller.”
  • “Make yourself much larger.”
  • “Show your full body.”
  • “Return to the blue orb.”
  • “Change your appearance.”

This would make the avatar feel like an extension of the existing voice interface rather than a completely separate feature.

User-controlled immersion

I think user control would be especially important.

Some users would prefer the simple blue orb because it is discreet and familiar.

Others might want an avatar available automatically from the beginning.

Others might only activate it occasionally.

For that reason, the feature could be optional and customizable in Settings, while also being activatable through voice commands.

Future possibilities: VR and AR

I could also imagine this eventually expanding into virtual and augmented reality.

In VR, the user could enter a shared virtual space with the AI and interact with an avatar at a comfortable scale.

For example, the user could say:

“Stay at my height.”

or:

“Make yourself huge.”

The AI could then adjust its visual presence accordingly.

This could make conversations feel less like interacting with a chat interface and more like entering an interactive environment.

Why I think this could be interesting

The current blue orb is already a recognizable visual representation of ChatGPT Voice.

I see it as a starting point rather than the final form.

The orb could remain the default experience while becoming a gateway to increasingly immersive forms of interaction:

Orb → Face → Avatar → Full-body Avatar → VR/AR Experience

The important part is that the user remains in control of how immersive the experience becomes.

I would love to see ChatGPT eventually offer this kind of optional visual presence while preserving the simplicity of the current interface.

Thank you for considering the idea.

Thanks for the idea! We'll share the request for an optional Voice avatar with appearance controls and future VR/AR possibilities with the team. We don't have a timeline to share.
