EnvironmentI’m reporting what appears to be a cross-device conversation rollback or stale-state synchronization issue.
I was using an existing long-running ChatGPT conversation (“Home”) on an Android tablet. During that session I exchanged a substantial number of messages with ChatGPT over several hours. The conversation was working normally and the messages were visible on the tablet.
Later I returned to my Windows computer and opened the same conversation in the new ChatGPT desktop experience/app. The conversation apparently loaded an older state that did not contain the messages from the Android session.
After continuing the conversation on the Windows computer, the entire block of messages from the Android session was missing. Those messages are now also unavailable when I return to the other device.
Important details that may help diagnose this:
- Same ChatGPT account on both devices.
- Source device: Android tablet.
- Destination device: Windows PC using the new ChatGPT desktop experience/app.
- This was an existing, very long conversation rather than a newly created chat.
- The missing messages covered approximately the period from when I left for work until I returned home.
- The messages had definitely existed and been displayed normally on the Android device.
- After opening/continuing the conversation on Windows, the conversation appeared to revert to an earlier point.
- A separate ChatGPT Work conversation that I used from the tablet during the same period synchronized correctly and is still present. The apparent rollback affected the existing Home conversation, not everything created on the Android device.
- ChatGPT’s retained context also no longer contains the missing conversation block, which is how we discovered this was more than a display/history-sidebar issue.
This looks consistent with the Windows client possibly opening a stale version of an existing conversation and then continuing from that state, although I cannot determine whether that is actually the underlying cause.
I would specifically like OpenAI to investigate:
- Whether multiple revisions/branches of this conversation still exist server-side and whether the missing Android messages can be recovered.
- Whether the Windows client submitted a message against an older conversation state and caused the newer Android state to become inaccessible.
- Whether there are known synchronization issues when moving an active conversation between Android and the new Windows experience.
- Whether there is anything I should do before switching devices to prevent another rollback.
I can provide the conversation name, approximate timestamps, screenshots, device/app versions, and any other diagnostic information you need.
Most importantly, please check whether the missing conversation revision can be recovered rather than treating this only as a missing-history/sidebar problem.
Thank you.
