Hi OpenAI Team,
I’d like to suggest a feature that could improve the ChatGPT experience, especially for users who use ChatGPT for learning, coding, research, and long conversations.
When reading a long ChatGPT response, users may have a doubt about a specific sentence or concept. Currently, we can select the text and use “Ask ChatGPT.” The answer is added to the same conversation, which is useful. However, ChatGPT moves the user to the newly generated answer. To continue reading the original topic, the user then has to scroll back and find the exact place where they stopped.
My suggestion
When a user selects a specific piece of text and clicks “Ask ChatGPT,” ChatGPT should keep the user at their current reading position instead of automatically moving them to the newly generated answer.
The answer can still be added further down in the same conversation for future reference.
Additionally, the selected text could have a small question/annotation indicator. When the user hovers over the selected text or indicator, a small pop-up could display the previously asked question and provide an option to view the complete answer.
This would allow users to ask multiple questions about different parts of a conversation while maintaining their original reading position and avoiding repeated scrolling.
I believe this would be particularly useful for students, developers, researchers, and anyone using ChatGPT as a learning or productivity tool.
Thank you for considering this feature request. I believe it could make long conversations much easier to navigate and create a more seamless, interactive experience.
