Codex is down, confirmed by OpenAI

I am getting the same issue in Codex app as well. It is some backend Codex key, not any of the ones I created. Logged in via normal ChatGPT Oauth.

yep 401 here too.. in codex desktop app (no api key used)

I keep getting a
unexpected status 401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided:

Error code in all of my “Work” threads on my desktop app for some reason.

I tried going to the web version and i get a “Error in message stream” error message.

i’ve tried creating new work chats and nothing is working, same error message every time. Regular chat works fine, but no “Work” chats are working…

Anyone dealing with the same issue?

Just saw that codex is down lol. Makes sense. I dont use codex that often, how long are their outages usually?

I’m facing the same problem. In my case, it started suddenly about 40 minutes ago.

401 error, unexpected status 401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided

I am signed into Codex using ChatGPT. The bundled Codex CLI reports:

Logged in using ChatGPT

However, both the ChatGPT Codex UI and the bundled Codex CLI fail with:

401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided: sk-svcac...fvMA

Endpoint:
https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses

This is not a user-provided API key. I do not have OPENAI_API_KEY or CODEX_API_KEY set, and there is no .env containing an OpenAI key.

I have already:

  • updated the ChatGPT macOS app
  • restarted the Mac
  • signed in using ChatGPT
  • regenerated ~/.codex/auth.json
  • tested on a different network/mobile tethering
  • reproduced the issue using the bundled Codex CLI

Bundled Codex CLI: v0.158.0-alpha.2

The CLI first attempts WebSocket, falls back to HTTPS, and HTTPS also returns the same 401.

Latest failed request:
request id: b5ce911e-9bde-4a93-8b45-1995d55f7d2a

cf-ray: a40dc00f5dc0df62-SYD

Could you check whether the ChatGPT-issued Codex service credential for my account/session is invalid or not being accepted by the Codex backend?

unexpected status 401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided.
This error

Error On codex while working on a project i have even tried from sveral laptops

This is common error signature I see as well:

“unexpected status 401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided”

:slightly_frowning_face:

Por aqui está igual, Br!!

@thsottiaux Pro subscriber here. Work keeps failing with 401 errors while regular chat works. This outage has interrupted my research and project work today. Could affected users get a usage reset once service is restored? It would help us catch up.

Logging out and then login with api key… gpt-6 luna will be roughly 1-2$ per hour…

@OpenAI_Support Same issue here. I’m a ChatGPT Pro subscriber, and Work stopped working for me after updating today, September 25. Regular chat still works, but Work fails in Chrome as well.

Error: 401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided: [REDACTED]
Endpoint: /backend-api/codex/responses

This is happening through my ChatGPT subscription, not through my own API integration.

This has interrupted research and project work I had planned for today. I understand outages happen, but losing access to a paid work tool and spending time retrying is frustrating.

Could you please pass this feedback to the Codex/Work team and ask them to consider a usage reset for affected subscribers once service is restored? It would help us catch up on the work this disruption has delayed.

Please also clarify whether failed requests count toward usage, and restore any allowance deducted in error.

I’ve already contacted Support privately and provided my request ID. I’m posting here to add my report to this incident and ask for a clear response from the team.

What do you mean? There is an error. They are working on it. What else do you expect?
