Codex app on Windows shows “Oops, an error occurred” even after clean reinstall

Hi,

The Codex desktop app on Windows is showing the following error immediately after opening:

“Oops, an error occurred”

I have already tried:

  • Closing all Codex, ChatGPT and OpenAI processes
  • Uninstalling the application
  • Removing the AppX package
  • Deleting Codex/OpenAI folders from AppData and LocalAppData
  • Renaming the .codex folder
  • Restarting Windows
  • Reinstalling the latest application version
  • Clicking “Update ChatGPT” and “Try again”

The issue persists even after a clean installation.

Environment:

  • Operating system: Windows 11 updated
  • ChatGPT plan: Plus
  • Country: Brazil
  • Application: Codex / ChatGPT desktop app
  • Error: “Oops, an error occurred”

The Codex CLI still works, but the desktop application does not.

Has anyone encountered this issue or found a fix?

I have also contacted OpenAI Support and attached a screenshot.

Welcome to the community @Matheus_Castro,

There was another similar report earlier today and the user found a workaround. I’d recommend to check this topic:

For those having the same issue: just close the app and update using windows store with the app closed.
