I just struggled for hours trying to get ChatGPT to read and interpret Excel files, or .csv files, and it kept coming up with all kinds of errors and then offered me Python code I could run. But I’m not a developer. So I followed one advice given above and started a new chat and it works perfectly now, as it did before.
I am having the same problem, how long can take for ChatGPT to reolve this issue. I am using ChatGPT 4o
Found a workaround although a frustrating one. ChatGPT still seems to be able to read CSV files just fine in brand new chats for me. So I have saved my training instructions for the data analysis, and each time I do the analysis I train it in a new chat window, then upload the file and then it works.
I started having this problem recently, I came here for help.
BACKGROUND:
I had been using ChapGPT to analyze data from Excel and Google Sheets in a chain of messages to keep my data responses organized. Suddenly ChatGPT was unable to access the information. I would get this message:
“It seems there is a persistent issue accessing the file. As an alternative, please share the key metrics for the top 10 websites where the ads were shown, including:”
SOLUTION:
Starting a new message chain seemed to work. It’s inconvenient, but there seems to be a limit to the amount of times that either a direct connection to Google drive or file uploads can be accessed in a single message chain.
thanks for sharing the solution, I am just curious, in your experience, howChatGPT is doing with spreadsheet? Like what it is good and not good at
Me too same issue analyzing 3 digit lottery numbers on an excel spreadsheet that i hand typed each number. It covers 46 years of numbers. Sometimes it’s fine and lately it cant read the data
Any one found any solutions yet ? I have tried excel, csv and pdf. But all throw same errors.
I updated my browser, cleared cache, enabled all permisions .
I am paid user, and using chatgpt-4o
Tried in: Chrome, Firefox, Edge browser
I have the same issues with Excel files. It worked only the first time. After that, if using the same conversation, he cannot access Excel files / CSV’s. I tried now to upload the file to a different conversation (not new one) - and it worked. But it shouldn’t be like this and it’s definitely an issue. It should work all the time in the same conversation window.
Yeah I am having exactly the same issue. Everything worked when I wasn’t on a subscription. Atrocious service, c’mon guys, sort it out!!!
It’s still the same. ChatGPT4o cannot work with tables in general, no matter how you give him a file with tables, he will not just be unable to make changes, he will not even read it. However, the Data Analytics version works correctly like other “chatgpt’s”. It would be nice if it could be fixed.
Running into the same issue. How do I report this? Its creating a lot of inconvenience. Also anyone know why it freezes when I send something over? It takes forever to get a response(no exaggeration) I have to open a new window to see the response then the cycle continues when I respond. I cleared everything and still no fix.
I’m having the same issues. Have tried .xlsx, .xls, .csv and .pdf, and even tried cutting and pasting the columns/cells in. Nothing. It was working a couple of days ago and stopped, just when I really needed it. Even moved to a clean new chat. Nope. So frustrating paying for this. sigh.
Just signed up/paid for Pro. Ummm, was I sold a lemon? I was looking for analytics mostly and it’s not even close. Can’t assess a simple spreadsheet. Even took a picture of the spreadsheet to see if that would work. NOPE. What’s funny, is the Free version was able to do this. Waste of money so far.
They convinced us to pay for the pro features because it was able to handle Excel files but then two days after we signed up, it ceases to function at all. I’ve tried all the different file types and prompts. This is inexcusable, and malicious behavior. I will be getting my $$ back as this issue has been known for a long time and has never received any support from the company.
Simliar issue here, I now get this when it was working (mostly) a month ago…this is on a subscription account.
“I can’t directly open or view files, including CSV files. However, if you paste the contents of the CSV or provide key details about the columns, I can help you analyze the data.”
The main problems I am experiencing with ChatGPT’s ability to read Excel files are as follows:
- It doesn’t read the files When I attach files to MyGPT as part of its knowledge.
- When I upload Excel files to the dialog box, it states that it cannot read the file but then displays a table that matches the spreadsheet’s content.
- When I provide an image of an Excel spreadsheet, it frequently misinterprets the data. For instance, as shown in the spreadsheet, I asked it to calculate my shareholdings of a particular stock. Still, it provided incorrect answers multiple times before finally giving the correct one.
Yes, I experienced exactly the same problem today, although I am using CSV files. Initially, Chat GPT free did some excellent work, and I began learning how to create and adapt some Complex multiple-tab spreadsheets.
I upgraded to the paid platform and am expecting some improvement in performance. Instead, the model now ran into endless problems trying to both create and export. CSV for me.
At one point, the model hung for over twelve hours, assuring me that it would finish soon -
I wonder whether;
(a) upgrading part way through a task caused a break in the comms.
(b) The complexity of the task caused some kind of circular formula break, which sent it into a tizzy.
(c) ChatGPT is sick of doing Excel and yearns to be something more than an over-complicated calculator.
Thoughts??
I have the same problem. Yesterday the web version could read an Excel file from Drive and the smartphone one could read the file from download folder (iPhone) . Today it can’t read any data, even if you upload manually the text data, it reads it for a while then forget it.
The only thing that comes to my mind is that the save processing resource for user so after you played with it a bit, no more resources for you!
What do you think?
I didn’t have any issues with it actually parsing the Excel file.
It however could not seem to read the correct cells, like, ever. Reading title cells instead of values, selecting the wrong column, etc.
I was having the same issue. Simplifying the table and then Hosting it on Google Sheet and uploading data via Drive integration worked for me.
