ChatGPT Needs Scroll Virtualization Yesterday
I’m a paying ChatGPT Pro subscriber and I genuinely love this product. But there is one issue that has been ignored for so long it’s become a running joke.
The desktop interface falls apart the moment a conversation gets long. Add a few attachments, throw in some images, have a real back-and-forth, and within just a handful of messages you’re dealing with input lag, choppy scrolling, and a browser that’s on its knees. This is not a hardware problem. It happens on fast machines with tons of RAM.
The app renders the entire conversation history in the DOM at once instead of using scroll virtualization, which only renders what’s actually visible on screen. It’s a solved problem everywhere except on one of the most visited sites on the internet.
This isn’t new
This topic has been discussed all over the internet, on this forum, on Reddit, and elsewhere for a very long time. The community has been screaming about it forever and it never lands on anyone’s roadmap.
The part that’s actually unacceptable
People are downloading random Chrome extensions just to make the interface usable. These extensions require full access to chatgpt.com and everything in it. Users are handing over their conversations and data to third party developers because OpenAI hasn’t addressed a performance issue that should have been prioritized years ago. That is a security and trust problem, not just a UX annoyance.
Can @OpenAI_Support please acknowledge this thread? Is there anyone here with enough pull to make this an actual priority and get it fixed? This has gone on way too long and the silence is just as frustrating as the problem itself.
