ChatGPT Team Workspace: Phone verification required for Codex/Desktop App?

I’m wondering if anyone else has run into this issue with a ChatGPT Team workspace.

Our company provides us with a ChatGPT Team workspace, and we normally sign in using a one-time verification code sent to our work email. This works perfectly fine in the web version of ChatGPT.

However, when trying to use the Codex desktop app (or the ChatGPT desktop app), we’re prompted to verify a phone number before we can continue.

This creates a problem for our organization:

  • Our company does not provide work phone numbers.
  • Many employees have already used their personal phone numbers to verify their own personal OpenAI accounts.
  • As far as we understand, the same phone number cannot be reused for another OpenAI account, so those employees are unable to complete verification for their company account.
  • Some employees also prefer not to associate their personal phone number with a company-managed account for privacy reasons.

Is there an alternative verification method for Team users, such as email-only verification or organization-managed authentication?

Thanks

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how this could be challenging, especially for organizations where employees aren't provided with work phones.

Based on the current implementation, ChatGPT Team (self-serve Business) users are required to complete phone verification as an additional security measure. Where available, WhatsApp can also be used as an alternative verification method.

Unfortunately, there aren't any exemptions available at this time, so users will need to complete verification using a supported phone number.

I understand this could be frustrating and an additional burden for you and your organization. While this may change in the future, we don't have any additional information to share at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience.
