ChatGPT Sites: Are automatic database backups and point-in-time recovery available?

Environment

  • Surface: macOS desktop app / Codex

  • Browser or app version: [Add version]

  • Affected feature and model, if relevant: ChatGPT Sites with a managed Cloudflare D1 database; model not relevant.

Bug

I’m looking for clarification about database backup and recovery in ChatGPT Sites rather than reporting a confirmed malfunction.

Our Site is a task-management application with persistent data in D1. The source code is stored locally and committed to Git, but that does not back up the live database.

Cloudflare documents D1 Time Travel as automatic and always enabled for production databases. However, I couldn’t find documentation explaining whether this protection is available to ChatGPT Sites owners or how to initiate a restore.

Could OpenAI confirm:

  1. Are Sites-managed D1 databases automatically backed up through Time Travel or another mechanism?

  2. What retention period applies?

  3. Can a Site owner initiate a point-in-time database restore, or must this go through Support?

  4. Does restoring a saved Site version affect the database, or only the application code?

  5. Is there a supported way to schedule full database exports to independent storage?

I would expect either documented recovery guarantees and a restore procedure, or clear guidance that Site owners need to implement their own backups.

Reproduction

Steps or a minimal example prompt:

  1. Create a ChatGPT Site that stores application data in D1.

  2. Save records in the deployed application.

  3. Look for documented database backup, retention and restore controls.

  4. Ask: “Show the available database recovery points for this Site and explain how to restore the database to yesterday.”

I have not found a documented workflow that confirms this is supported. No destructive restore test has been attempted.

Diagnostics

Exact error or screenshot:
No runtime error. This is a question about available recovery controls and documentation.

When it happened (with timezone) and how often:
Investigated on 14 September 2026, Europe/Bratislava. The question remains unresolved.

That is not a bug.
