Chat history search omits most recent chats—even exact titles visible in the sidebar

ChatGPT conversation search appears to be missing most of my recent chats.

Expected behavior

Searching for an exact word appearing in a conversation’s title—and repeatedly throughout the conversation—should return that conversation.

Actual behavior

Many recent conversations remain visible in my sidebar and open normally, but search does not return them. Instead, it returns older or unrelated conversations containing the same word.

The attached screenshot provides a direct example:

• A recent chat beginning with “Anniversary restaurant…” is visibly highlighted in the sidebar.

• I searched for “Anniversary” under the Chats filter.

• Search returned several older conversations containing “anniversary.”

• It did not return the highlighted recent chat whose title begins with that exact word.

I reproduced the same failure with several other recent chats by searching for exact terms appearing in their titles, including:

• “PWA”

• “iPhone”

• “Stop Word”

Those conversations remain visible and accessible from the sidebar but are absent from search results.

This does not appear to be a complete cutoff based on date: I found one (and only one so far) recent conversation was returned correctly when I searched for an exact word from its title. The problem therefore appears to affect individual conversation records within the search index rather than every recent conversation uniformly.

Impact

Search is no longer a reliable way to retrieve my conversations. Because the sidebar does not provide a static, fully loaded list that can be searched with Ctrl+F, conversations omitted from the search index can become extremely difficult to locate once they move farther down the history. This has made my current account almost useless. I am considering replacing my account.

Questions for OpenAI

1. Is there a known issue affecting the indexing of recent conversations?

2. Can an account or workspace’s conversation-search index be rebuilt?

3. Is there another way to display or export a complete list of conversation titles while search is malfunctioning?

4. What information should affected users provide to support so this reaches the appropriate technical team?

I have not included private conversation links, workspace identifiers, client names, or confidential conversation content in this public post.

I’m experiencing substantially the same issue.

In my case, certain conversations are still visible and accessible, but exact words from their titles do not return those conversations in search. Other conversations search correctly, so the failure appears selective rather than universal.

I have reproduced the issue across Chrome, Chrome Incognito, and Firefox, but another ChatGPT account on the same computer does not exhibit the problem.

I have opened multiple OpenAI Support cases, including #11273039 and #11381245. These cases have repeatedly been escalated and then closed or become inaccessible without a substantive resolution.

OpenAI Support also requested HAR diagnostics from me, which I provided, but I have not been able to get confirmation that the diagnostics were reviewed or that the issue reached engineering.

Your description of individual conversation records apparently being omitted from the search index is very consistent with what I am seeing. It’s extremely frustrating and has been going on for months with no resolution or help from OpenAI.
