# ChatGPT Project Memory

I suggest adding a **Project Memory** system that works alongside the existing Account Memory.

## _ **Core Idea** _

Each Project should have its own dedicated memory space that stores information related only to that project.

For example:

**Account Memory:**

- User preferences
- General long-term information about the user

Project Memory: Story"The Unknown World"

- Lore
- Character Development
- Dialogues

Project Memory: Story “Void”

- Powers
- Lore
- Worldbuilding
- Characters
- Dialogues

This would prevent unrelated projects from mixing information and help maintain consistency within large creative or professional projects.

## _ **Visibility and Management** _

Just as users can view and manage Account Memory, each Project should have a way to:

- View Project Memory
- Edit Project Memory
- Delete Project Memory entries
- Pin important facts
- Remove pinned facts

A dedicated Project Memory icon or menu could provide access to these features.

## Memory Allocation

To avoid unlimited storage requirements, Project Memory should not create additional memory capacity.

Instead, both Account Memory and Project Memories would share the same overall memory quota.

Example:

If an account has a total memory capacity of 100 units(hypothetically):

1. Total memory: 100 units
2. Suppose Project “The Unknown World” has something stored in the memory of value suppose 30 units, then

- Total memory: 100 units
- Project “The Unknown World” Memory: 30 units
- Space left for Account Memory and other Projects= 70 units.

1. Suppose Project Void has nothing stored in the Memory, then

- Total memory: 100 units
- Project memory: 0 units
- Memory left for normal chats or other projects: 100 units.

So, the final illustration based on the above example is:

- Total memory: 100 units
- Project Memory for “The Unknown World”: 30 units
- Project Memory for “Void”: 0 units
- Memory space left: 70 units

This allows users to decide how their available memory is distributed while keeping storage costs manageable for OpenAI.

## Benefits

- Better organization of large projects
- Reduced mixing of information between unrelated projects
- Improved consistency for long-term work
- Easier worldbuilding, research, writing, software development, and other complex projects
- More transparency because users can see exactly what a project remembers.

## Optional Enhancement

A “Pinned Canon Facts” feature could allow users to mark certain facts as authoritative within a project. This would help maintain consistency when a project evolves over months or years.

For example:

- Red = 30%
- Blue = 35%
- Yellow = 35%

Pinned facts would be prioritized over older or conflicting information.
Pinned facts cannot be rewritten, unless unpinned.

## Financial Situations:

- This feature should be available in the free version along with the Premiums as this feature neither gives more memory space to a user nor does it create additional data/memory spaces.
- It only divides the General Account Memory into two parts: Account Memory and Project Memories, all of them using the same storage value.
- The common storage also ensures that users doesn’t get infinite memory and so number of subscriptions will not change.

### This proposal aims to improve project organization and memory management while respecting practical storage and cost limitations.

Hey @[**AfaninZoro**](https://community.openai.com/u/afaninzoro), welcome to the community! This is a helpful suggestion, especially for people using Projects for long-running work.

A dedicated Project Memory could make it easier to keep project-specific context separate from general account memory, whether that’s lore, research notes, product details, characters, or development decisions. It also fits with feedback others have shared around better long-term continuity and more control over what ChatGPT remembers inside a Project.

I can’t share a timeline right now, but I’ll pass this feedback along internally.
