I have been a heavy ChatGPT user for a couple months and currently use it throughout the day, every day. I recently upgraded my subscription because I rely on ChatGPT for medical research, technology troubleshooting, shopping decisions, travel planning, and organizing my thoughts. It has become an important part of my daily life.
At the same time, I’ve become increasingly frustrated by what I see as its biggest limitation: a lack of persistent context.
The issue is not that ChatGPT forgets isolated facts. The issue is that it loses the larger story.
For example, I have ongoing medical issues that span weeks and months. I don’t want to repeatedly explain my history, timeline, tests, medications, previous advice, and unresolved questions. I want ChatGPT to understand that these are continuing situations rather than unrelated conversations.
The same applies to other long-term projects. Whether it’s troubleshooting technology, planning home improvements, researching products, or tracking my pets’ health, I often find myself repeating information that has already been discussed extensively.
I would love to see ChatGPT evolve into a true long-term assistant with features such as:
- Persistent understanding of ongoing projects and medical timelines.
- Automatic organization of conversations into topics that continue over time.
- Powerful semantic search across every past conversation, allowing me to search for concepts rather than remembering which chat contained the information.
- The ability to ask questions like “What have we already learned about my pancreatitis?” or “What was Whisper’s weight last month?” and receive an accurate answer drawn from previous conversations.
- Memory that preserves context and relationships, not just isolated facts.
- A user-controlled knowledge base that I can review, edit, organize, and correct when necessary.
- The ability to merge information from multiple conversations into a single evolving history instead of treating each chat as largely independent.
I understand there are technical and privacy challenges involved, and I appreciate the progress that has already been made with memory features. However, I believe contextual memory is the single improvement that would most transform ChatGPT from an excellent conversational AI into a genuinely indispensable personal assistant.
I also want to emphasize that increasing subscription levels should not only provide higher usage limits. For users who depend on ChatGPT every day, the greatest value would come from deeper continuity, better recall of prior work, and the ability to build on months or years of conversations without repeatedly starting over.
Despite these frustrations, I continue to use ChatGPT because of the quality of its reasoning and its ability to help me think through complex problems. My feedback comes from someone who wants the product to succeed and become even more useful.
Thank you for considering these suggestions. I hope future versions of ChatGPT continue moving toward long-term contextual understanding, because that is the feature that would have the greatest impact on my experience.
