Hi everyone — I’m seeing a behavior change with ChatGPT Record mode on the macOS desktop app. In previous versions, I could create multiple recordings inside the same chat thread. Now, every time I finish a recording and click “Send,” the upload completes and ChatGPT automatically opens a NEW chat, and the recording summary/notes (canvas) appear in that new chat instead of staying in the original conversation where I started recording.
What I’m doing (steps to reproduce):
-
Open ChatGPT for macOS
-
Open an existing chat thread (not a Project; Temporary Chat is OFF)
-
Click the Record button in the main chat composer (the circle icon)
-
Record a short clip → Stop → Send
-
When the upload finishes, the app switches/opens a new chat and places the recording summary there
Expected behavior:
Multiple recordings should be able to be sent into the same chat I started from, without creating a new thread each time.
Actual behavior:
A new chat opens automatically at upload completion, and the recording notes/summary show up there.
Environment:
-
ChatGPT macOS app version: 1.2026.119 (1780053722)
-
macOS: Tahoe 26.5.1 (25F80)
-
Not in a Project
-
Temporary Chat: OFF
-
Happens exactly when the upload completes
What I tried (no change):
-
Fully updated the app
-
Sign out/in
-
Restart app / close extra windows
-
Reinstall the app
-
Tested focus/shortcut ideas (still happens)
Question:
Is this a known change in Record mode behavior, or a bug? Any workaround to keep successive recordings in a single chat thread?
