ChatGPT Classic on Windows – rapid flickering of input buttons on mouse hover

Title: ChatGPT Classic on Windows – rapid flickering of input buttons on mouse hover

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a persistent UI issue in ChatGPT Classic for Windows.

Whenever I move the mouse over the buttons at the bottom of the chat window, they start flickering extremely rapidly. This affects, among others:

  • Add Files

  • Microphone

  • Think

  • Send Prompt (↑)

The flickering appears to be caused by the buttons being rapidly re-rendered when the mouse cursor is hovering over them. It can be so fast that it is difficult to capture properly in a screen recording, and sometimes it also makes the buttons harder to click.

What makes this especially noticeable is that the problem only occurs in ChatGPT Classic on the same PC. I have tested the same setup with:

  • ChatGPT in a web browser → no issue

  • the new ChatGPT Windows app → no issue

  • ChatGPT Classic → issue occurs consistently

So this does not appear to be a general Windows, monitor, mouse or graphics issue, but rather something specific to the Classic desktop app.

System information:

  • ChatGPT Classic version: 1.2026.190

  • Operating system: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro

  • Windows version: 10.0.22631

  • Build: 22631

I found an older Community thread describing exactly the same behaviour, but that topic was automatically closed after 24 hours, so I could no longer reply there.

The issue is therefore still present, at least on my system.

Has anyone else experienced this with the current ChatGPT Classic version?
And if so, have you found a workaround or a setting that fixes it?

I’m happy to provide a screen recording or additional system information if that would help narrow down the cause.

Does anyone have a fix for this yet?

I do not have a fix, sadly, but I have been experiencing this problem for around two weeks or so.

Ok, thanks. If it’s of any help, on my other PC’s and laptops, I do not have this problem. So it must be a setting on my Lenovo computer that’s causing the glitch. At least I’m assuming that. It must be confusing a direction or command. And it’s only on ChatGPT too.

This is a temporary fix but it works beautifully. I asked Chat if there was a way to just disable those help boxes and there is. Here’s what you have to do. When you do this, you will not get any boxes appearing when you hover over the mic or any of the icons. It works!!!

How to Stop the Flashing Dictation Labels in ChatGPT

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the extension called Stylus.

  2. Install Stylus by clicking Add to Chrome, then confirm by clicking Add extension.

  3. Return to a regular ChatGPT page at chatgpt .com. Do not remain on the Chrome Web Store page.

  4. Click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon near the upper-right corner of Chrome.

  5. Click Stylus.

  6. In the Stylus window, click the plus sign (+) next to “chatGPT .com"

  7. Paste this code into the large code box:

[role="tooltip"] {
  display: none !important;
}
  1. Click Save on the left side of the page.

  2. Return to ChatGPT and press Ctrl + R to reload the page.

  3. Click the microphone and try hovering over the X and check mark. The microphone and buttons should still work, but the rapidly flashing “Cancel dictation,” “Escape,” and similar labels should be gone.

Note: This hides the small hover labels throughout ChatGPT, but it does not remove or disable the actual buttons.

Hey everyone, sorry for the late reply!

Since the browser and newer Windows app worked on the same PC, those are useful alternatives. ChatGPT Classic still receives fixes and support, though I couldn’t find a documented fix for this specific issue.

If it’s still affecting you, please email support@openai.com with this thread link and any recording you already have so Support can take a closer look. You can also use the chat bubble in the Help Center.
