I am facing an account-lifecycle problem with an existing ChatGPT Business account.
The account is active, I still have full access to the current email address, and it contains a substantial amount of ongoing work: chat history, Projects, workspace membership, settings, integrations and accumulated context.
However, under:
Settings → Account
the email address is displayed but is not editable. There is no supported self-service “change email” option available on the account.
This is a very basic account-management requirement.
A user may need to change an email address for completely normal reasons:
-
company or domain change,
-
moving from a personal to a professional address,
-
mailbox retirement,
-
security reasons,
-
or simply changing the primary address used for the service.
Creating an entirely new ChatGPT account is not a realistic solution when the existing account contains months or years of work and there is no complete migration path for all of that data and context.
In my case I still have full access to the current mailbox, so ownership could be verified through both the old and new addresses if necessary.
The question is very simple:
What is the supported procedure for changing the sign-in email of an existing ChatGPT Business account while preserving the same account, chat history, Projects, workspace membership, configuration and settings?
If this requires an administrator or OpenAI Support rather than self-service, that is completely acceptable — but there needs to be a documented and usable process.
A Business product should not effectively make the email address a permanent lifetime identifier once significant work has accumulated on the account.
