I’m not sure what the feature is called, but it’s the navigation menu on the right side of the page that appears for long chats. I refreshed the page and now it’s just completely gone. I closed my browser, erased cache/cookies for ChatGPT, logged back in, zoomed in and out to resize the window, and it’s still not there.
Did they get rid of the feature? Is it just me? I really need it back since I have a really, really long chat going at the moment and it’s a pain to have to just scroll for minutes on end trying to find a previous message without the navigation thing on the right side of the page.
Here’s a screenshot of what I’m talking about. I took it a few days ago before the feature suddenly disappeared an hour or so ago.
Another user and I were chatting about this, and I made a full topic about it, as well.
You have to scroll to the beginning of the chat for the feature to reappear. I cannot tell you why this has been changed.
Good lord. The chat I’m currently on is over 200 messages (from me) long. Including the responses, that would be 400+ messages. That’ll take ages to scroll through, but I’ll try it out.
I hear you, it is difficult for us right now.
Side note: you know when you regenerate a prompt and we get the little arrows and it shows ‘1/2’ or however it is shown? I notice it is suddenly missing now. Great, just lovely.
Finally got to the very start of the chat after about 15 minutes. That was so tedious, but it worked, so thank you! Hopefully they fix whatever is going on so we don’t need to go to the first message just for it to appear.
Also, I checked and the 1/2 thing you’re talking about is gone. Seriously, what is going on with all these issues?
Sorry for the late reply! I’m glad it worked and I hope they get these issues fixed soon, as well. I wonder if the outages or whatever happened over the past couple days caused this?
Has there been outages? I hadn’t noticed. That would explain the issues…
Yeah, according to the Status.Openai website, there were problems between August 18-20th, with Chatgpt having issues with logins and sign ups on the 19th. I saw other people posting about it as well, but personally I hadn’t noticed any of those things.
Instead of scrolling back all the way, you can click share chat and it will copy a read link, you can open the chat from that link and you will see the side bar again.
took so long for the navigator to re-appear. They need to fix this issue to just leave it on the right side as before.

right-side chat navigator disappeared + share got stuck in a very long chat
hi! i think i found another piece of this bug :3
the right-side navigator that lets me scroll through my prompts/jump to them disappeared in one of my very long chats. i found the workaround people mentioned here about using share to get the navigator back, so i tried that.
except apparently my chat is too much of a beast lol. i clicked share and it just… spun. and spun. i kept talking in the chat while it was trying because at that point i was curious what would happen >:3 the conversation itself kept working normally and accepted all the new messages, but share never finished.
eventually i reloaded the page - that stopped the share spinner, but the navigator was still gone. i also checked settings → data controls → shared links, and no new link had been created, so it doesn’t look like share finished in the background either.
so, current results from poking it:
- navigator disappeared in a very long conversation
- share stayed stuck loading while the chat itself continued working
- i could keep sending/receiving messages while share was stuck
- reloading stopped the stuck share attempt
- no shared link was actually created
- navigator was still missing after reload
i don’t know if the sheer size of the conversation is relevant, but if you need someone to stress-test extremely long chats, apparently i’m already doing that for fun 
I hope that removing this was just a glitch and it’s coming back.
