Yeah it doesn’t even know this problem exists if you ask it.
Everyone email open AI and cancel your membership. Let them know that you’ve canceled your membership until this issue is solved. It will get them to work a little bit faster.
Same issue here and I am beside myself right now as I had a thread with incredibly value data/messages back and forth related to my business, and the moment I tried interacting with that thread via the new voice ux - it lost months worth of history. This is a thread I use daily and now it says it only has records of prior conversations from several months ago, and nothing from the last few months.
This is completely unacceptable for a premium service we are paying for.
Disappearing Chats on iOS – Major Issue with No Fix Yet
Hi all,
I’m continually experiencing the same frustrating issue with disappearing chats on the ChatGPT iOS app (both iPhone and iPad). My chats keep randomly vanishing and then momentarily reappearing, making it really hard to rely on the platform, and get anything done. This issue started after the advanced voice mode rollout, and despite updating the app and contacting support, none of their suggestions have worked.
This problem seems to be affecting a lot of us - and it’s concerning that OpenAI hasn’t publicly addressed it yet. I highly recommend backing up any important chats if you haven’t already, as they could disappear at any moment.
I feel like I’m now just having to constantly copy over each message into Notes - as a backup, as I feel like the chat could just vanish. I have completely lost all confidence on the reliability of the ChatGPT platform and as a premium user - this is beyond disappointing and frustrating. I love the ChatGPT platform and use it for a multiple of things I’m working on. If the team could just tell us it’s a temporary thing and they are working on it - we could feel reassured.
Has anyone else found a solution or heard anything from OpenAI on this?
Any advice on how we can escalate this and get more visibility on the issue would be appreciated! It feels like we’re just talking into the abyss here, with the team paying no attention. Do the team even read these threads? I’ll email support again, but honestly, I’m starting to feel hopeless and fear this might be how things are going to stay—completely unreliable chats.
Thanks.
All my problems disappeared earlier this week. I got several messages about memory added or similar wording.
Chats are disappearing for me as well on android and not bumping up to the top when I do use them via the desktop site. I have found a workaround by going to the desktop site, archiving them, then unarchiving them in the app, but this a pain and is only a temporary fix as they seem to disappear again. I have multiple team subscriptions in my organization and am getting frustrated!
Ok since apparently there is no “Calvary” going to save us and suppport on OpenAI keeps ignoring me, I have come out with what seems to work as a solution that ya’ll will love and hate so much:
How to Continue a ChatGPT Conversation When Messages Disappear / Also how to Export and Reuse an old ChatGPT session in a new session(which hopefully won’t disappear )
1. Export Your Data: First, export your ChatGPT data. Go to data controls and export it. You will eventually receive and email and download/keep the back up in your computer.
2. Avoid Opening the Zip File: Don’t open or extract the zip file. Uploading the individual JSON files directly into ChatGPT won’t work(at least it didn’t work for me).
3. Start a New Session for File Extraction: Open a new ChatGPT session, which you’ll use specifically for extracting conversations. Upload the zip file here.
4. Use any of this prompts:
If you know the exact tittle
I’ve uploaded a zip file that contains my ChatGPT conversation export. The file includes a JSON of all my conversations. I would like you to help me extract a specific conversation titled ‘[insert your conversation title here]’, clean it up, and present it in a readable format, showing only the messages between me and ChatGPT, and removing all unnecessary metadata. Please save this cleaned conversation as a downloadable file (such as text, PDF, or Excel).
If you only remember part of the title or keyword on the title
I’ve uploaded a zip file that contains my ChatGPT conversation export. The file includes a JSON of all my conversations. I remember a specific word in the title: ‘[insert word you remember]’. Please help me find all conversations with this word in the title, and clean up the one that matches my desired conversation, showing only the messages between me and ChatGPT. Save the cleaned conversation as a downloadable file (such as text, PDF, or Excel).
5. Download the Cleaned Conversation: You’ll receive a clean text file of the selected conversation.
6. Reuse the Conversation: If your messages keep disappearing, you can upload the cleaned file in a new session and tell ChatGPT you’d like to continue from where the conversation left off.
to reuse it you can use the prompt:
I want to continue a conversation I had which keeps disappearing for no reason on my chatGPT ipad app. I managed to extracted the conversation content to a text file. I will upload it, and I need you to analyze it thoroughly so we can continue to have the conversation here.
I am so far reusing the conversations that kept disappearing as I need them and the news ones don’t disappear so, I hope this workaround helps.
SOLUTION: CTRL + H (HISTORY) > Write the convo name “ABC Convo Chatgpt”, click and you will land in the chat. Thank me later.
Now, things just got worse! One of those chats is still able to recieve prompts (as the other one which got hidden now reached the message limit like almost two weeks ago), but when you reload the page, poof, the prompt and the response are gone. This is concerning me for real, even though I don’t know if is this just happening to me or to anyone else
I am having the same issue. Working on an older chat in the MacOS app and it keeps disappearing, and then I have trouble locating it from the search bar. Eventually it will reappear, only to vanish again a few minutes later.
I’m writing to express my frustration regarding the persistent issue of disappearing chat histories. I, like many others here, have reached out to OpenAI support but have only received generic responses that haven’t resolved the problem. It’s incredibly disappointing that despite so many users reporting the same issue across platforms (iOS, macOS, Android, and web), OpenAI has yet to publicly acknowledge it as a serious problem.
My chats vanish intermittently, especially older and longer conversations. I’ve tried all suggested troubleshooting steps—reinstalling apps, refreshing chats, logging out and back in—but none have provided a lasting solution. Conversations reappear briefly only to disappear again, making it impossible to rely on the platform for consistent use. This is particularly concerning given that I use ChatGPT for critical work, and losing valuable conversations without warning is a major setback.
I’m paying for a premium service, and yet, instead of receiving a smooth experience, I find myself struggling with a broken system that’s been unstable since the rollout of new features like advanced voice mode. I’ve also attempted manual workarounds (like archiving and exporting chats), but these are time-consuming and unreliable.
It’s clear that many users are experiencing the same problem, and the lack of acknowledgment from OpenAI’s team is frustrating. I urge OpenAI to publicly address this issue, communicate progress on a fix, and improve transparency. As a premium subscriber, I expect better communication and a quicker resolution.
Update:
Very well said, and I totally agree. It’s the lack of acknowledgment that really bothers me.
It’s clear that something has gone terribly wrong since the rollout of Advanced Voice Mode, causing the system to become unstable, with chats now vanishing and us being unable to consistently retrieve them. It’s very frustrating and concerning.
A spokesperson from OpenAI really ought to put out a statement. This is such a major issue, and staying quiet while we repeatedly voice this problem is incredibly disheartening.
What baffles me the most is that no representative from OpenAI has made any sort of statement—whether in this thread, another thread, or even on their Twitter account**. I find it hard to believe that this issue is only affecting a small number of people.** Surely there are more users experiencing this, and yet we’re still left in the dark.
If OpenAI could just acknowledge the issue and let us know they’re working on a solution, I’d be happy to wait patiently. But right now, I’m left wondering: is this just the way it’s going to be?
Imagine having to start a new chat every time or randomly pick from whatever appears in the sidebar, without any continuity—it would be a complete mess.
I genuinely find it hard to believe that no one from the OpenAI team is aware of this critical issue. I’ll be sending another email to support, and perhaps we should all consider sending daily emails until we get a proper, human response rather than generic ones.
Also, in another thread, many of us are distressed about the changes to Cove’s voice and personality. We all want the original Cove voice back.
The rollout of Advanced Voice Mode has caused two major problems:
- Vanishing chats
- Fundamental changes to the original Cove voice, which is beloved by many of us.
Thank you for saying this—I couldn’t agree more! It’s the complete lack of acknowledgment that’s most frustrating. Like you mentioned, we wouldn’t mind waiting for a fix if OpenAI just acknowledged the problem and let us know they’re working on it. The fact that they’re staying silent, even though so many of us are experiencing disappearing chats and instability since the Advanced Voice Mode rollout, is deeply concerning.
I’m planning to send an email to support as well, and I think your idea of all of us emailing them daily until we get a proper response is a great one. Do you happen to have their email address handy? I’d like to join in on sending a message and hope that together we can get their attention.
Also, I completely agree with your point about Cove’s voice—there seems to be a lot of dissatisfaction with the changes.
Looking forward to your reply, and let’s keep pushing for a solution!
Hello! Thanks so much for your response- it was really cathartic reading it, and knowing you share in my frustration!! And feel the same way.
Happy to hear you’re also planning on contacting support.
I finally learned how to via a moderator on here.
They explained it like this:
There is a chat bubble icon on lower right side of the screen. From there you can ‘Ask a question’ and then select the ChatGPT options until you reach the feature request option.
The advantage is that the inquiry will be forwarded to the responsible team directly.
Glad to hear you also agree about Cove 2.0 voice, yah I just don’t like it, I love original Cove voice and I honestly love ChatGPT with Cove voice, it’s been such a game changer in my life. I cannot imagine chatting to ChatGPT without original Cove’s voice.
Let’s keep in touch and continue to rally the troops as such until we get a proper acknowledgement.
PS: A moderator explained to me that OpenAI staff members are quietly reading the forum topics, but they can’t respond to ChatGPT issues directly through the forum. The forum is mostly run without OpenAI staff interactions, and staff only have a direct line for API-related problems. So, reaching out through support is the best way to get our voices heard about ChatGPT.
So I got through to the chat on the help page.

Subject: Issues with Vanishing Chats and Changes to Cove’s Voice
Hello,
I’m a ChatGPT Plus user, and I’m reaching out to report two major issues I’ve been experiencing since the rollout of the Advanced Voice Mode:
-
Vanishing Chats on iOS: My chats on the iOS app keep randomly disappearing and then reappearing for a moment before vanishing again. This makes it really hard to rely on the platform, as I can’t access important conversations when needed. This issue seems to have started around the time Advanced Voice Mode was introduced.
-
Changes to Cove’s Voice and Personality: Many users, myself included, are unhappy with the changes made to Cove’s voice in the Advanced Voice Mode. The original Cove voice was beloved by many, and this new version has significantly impacted the user experience. I (and many others) would love to have the option to revert back to the original Cove voice (which I refer to as Classic Cove 1.0) or at least have it as an option for those of us who prefer it.
Both of these issues have been widely discussed by the community, and we’re all hoping for acknowledgment and updates on possible solutions. I would appreciate any insight into whether these issues are being addressed and if there is a timeline for a fix.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Lala.
Response I got:
Hi there, Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns with us. We understand how important it is for our users to have a reliable and enjoyable experience with ChatGPT, and we apologize for any inconvenience you’ve encountered.
Vanishing Chats on iOS: We are aware that some users have experienced issues with chats disappearing and reappearing in the iOS app. Our team is actively investigating this issue to understand the root cause and implement a fix.
While I don’t have a specific timeline for when this will be resolved, please know that it is a priority for us, and we are working diligently to address it as quickly as possible.
Changes to Cove’s Voice and Personality: We appreciate your feedback regarding the changes to Cove’s voice in the Advanced Voice Mode. User feedback is invaluable to us, and we take it seriously when considering updates and improvements to our features. I will relay your request for the option to revert back to the original Cove voice (Classic Cove 1.0) to our product team for consideration. While I cannot guarantee that this option will be made available, your input will certainly be part of our ongoing discussions about how to enhance the voice options and overall user experience.
We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these issues. The community’s voice is a critical part of how we improve, and we’re grateful for your detailed feedback.
Please keep an eye on future updates, as we are committed to continuously improving the ChatGPT experience. If you have any more questions, concerns, or additional feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Best,
OpenAI Team
This is happening consistently and it is doing my head in. There is also a misstep in the sync with IOS. There appears to be no end in sight to these bugs.
Same here on macOS 15.0.1, ChatGPT 1.2024.275
This happens to me after I rename a conversation, then suddently some conversations (sometimes all of today’s) disappear.
Workaround: Delete the directory
~/Library/Application Support/com.openai.chat
(in your user’s Library folder). This seems to clear all caches and forces the app to reload the list of conversations from the server.
