Can someone help please with generating response issue

Firstly im new to this forum so apologies if I have made any mistake with the tags or anything like that.

So over the past 3 months I’ve used chatgpt (free account) to create a storyline. I have now reach probably over 200 chats, I have donee this before and noticed that around halfway at 100 chats it starts to get slow and doesn’t always provide the best responses. Never the less it still generates responses. Last night I carried on with my story, this morning I woke up to find that about 3 lines of chats I did were no where to be found. It now says error generating response and does not let me type. Is anyone able to help provide a way to resolve this issue or is my chat completely bugged out. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum!

I typically do not go past about 30 chats and those are the exception, most of mine are about 3 or less.

Be aware that each time you prompt ChatGPT in the same conversation it takes what it knows, what was given in your prompt and creates a new prompt internally, this is how it passes along history of the conversations. So as conversations get longer, knowledge from the start may be lost, thus why many don’t do long conversations. However that is changing when using the canvas.

As for a possible way to save your work, here are two different options.

  1. Archive the conversation if possible then use information from there to create a new conversation.
  2. Go back a few prompts and edit the prompt, which will remove the information below that and just ask to show the entire story at this point or something and then capture that and start a new conversation.

The point is basically that once a conversation goes bad the chance of recovering back to a normal conversation is minimal.

Thanks very much, this is greatly appreciated.

I managed to fix the issue. The problem was too many responses were being generated and I had to stick to one response out of the several it generated. I will bear in mind what you said regarding it using prompts. the conversation has thankfully returned to normal. Greatly appreciated have a good day
