I have found that old conversations I had that reached the maximum length are no longer able to be read at all. It either is completely blank or it sends me back to the New Chat with a message saying “This conversation is too long, please start a new one.” This means I cannot even go back to read my old, extensive conversations that got too long. I am reporting this as a bug but it seems it has been made a deliberate function of the system. I want to go back just to enjoy reading some of my old conversations and now they are effectively lost.
That doesn’t sound right. Even if a conversation has reached the length limit, you should normally still be able to open and read it, so seeing blank chats or getting redirected immediately is definitely worth investigating.
A few quick questions that would help narrow this down:
- Is this happening on the web app, mobile app, or both?
- Does it happen with all long conversations or only certain ones?
- Around when did you first notice this happening?

Hi folks,
I am experiencing the same issue described here regarding older long conversations becoming inaccessible.
When attempting to open older conversations that previously reached the conversation length limit, I either receive a blank page or am redirected to a new chat with the message:
“This conversation is too long, please start a new one.”
I am not attempting to continue these conversations—I only wish to access them in a read-only capacity as historical records, including for the creation of offline personal reference documents.
Some of these conversations contain extensive personal history, important project work, and long-term reference material, so losing access to them is extremely concerning.
I am also experiencing a second issue that may or may not be related.
When ChatGPT generates downloadable documents for me (such as DOCX files), the download sometimes fails with the red error:
“Failed to get upload status for /mnt/data/[filename].docx”
When this happens, the file cannot be downloaded at all.
Troubleshooting already attempted:
-
browser refresh / hard refresh
-
retrying later
-
repeated attempts in the same session
-
prior troubleshooting with ChatGPT assistance
Environment:
-
ChatGPT web interface
-
Windows 10
-
Chrome browser
-
ChatGPT Plus subscription
At the moment, I am dealing with:
-
inaccessible historical conversations
-
failed document downloads
Can someone please confirm whether these are known issues?
Many thanks,
Steve
Same issus here with a lot of my older conversation ![]()
Hello,
I have the same issue unfortunately. Can’t access the conversations that has reached max length limit either on the web app or the mobile app. I noticed it for the first time today, but after doing some research, I found users who noticed it about a month ago… I hope it’s fixable.
Hey @Laventura
Can you please create a support ticket and share the case ID here so that I can take a look at it internally.
