When a user manually assigns
a conversation title,
that title should become authoritative.
ChatGPT can currently rename
an already manually named conversation
based on later conversation content.
Observed example:
The chat was manually named:
“SOZIALGERICHT”
Later, the sidebar showed:
“Sozialgericht Arbeitsstrang”
The user did not request this rename.
This creates unnecessary confusion,
especially in structured workflows
where chat names are deliberately used
as project labels or workstream identifiers.
Expected behavior
Once a user manually renames a chat,
that title should remain unchanged.
Automatic title generation should stop
for that conversation unless the user
explicitly chooses to:
- rename it manually again
- reset to automatic naming
- enable automatic title updates
Why this matters
Manually assigned chat names
often have a specific organizational purpose.
They may represent:
- project names
- legal workstreams
- client matters
- document groups
- workflow stages
Changing them automatically
breaks the user’s own information structure.
Core principle
Manual naming should override
automatic naming.
Acceptance criteria
-
A manually assigned chat title
is never changed automatically. -
Automatic renaming stops
after manual naming. -
The user can explicitly restore
automatic naming if desired. -
Sidebar, search and recent lists
consistently show
the manually chosen title. -
Existing project organization
is not altered without user action.
