Beta App – Mechanical Clicking Noise During Internet Search (Post July 11 Update)

I’m using the beta version of the ChatGPT Android app on a Samsung A13, fully updated. Since the July 11, 2025 update (v1.2025.189), I’ve been hearing a persistent clicking noise that occurs only during internet search activity—and only when Standard Voice is active and in use.

This is not voice stutter or playback lag. It’s a mechanical-sounding click, like a CD or DVD drive trying and failing to spin up. The click triggers only during a web search, never during other actions like:

Canvas generation

File perusal

Text response

Image generation

Memory recall

Important context:

I’m using Standard Voice (not Advanced Voice).

When using text-only (no voice at all), the clicking sound does not occur.

The issue clearly depends on voice being active and in use during the search.

Confirmed on both:

A Team (business) account

A personal free-tier account

Same device, same app install—proving it’s tied to the beta app itself, not account settings or sync behavior.

This bug began immediately after the July 11, 2025 update, and was not present in prior builds.

Thanks,

Yep you’re not alone. I’ve been experiencing the exact same clicking issue on iOS, starting around July 11th (possibly even slightly before that). It only happens during live web search in voice mode the moment the web kicks in, the clicking starts. It’s rhythmic, persistent, and annoying. Sometimes it keeps going during the first 5-10 seconds of gpt talking. It wasnt there before this latest app update (v1.2025.189).

This seems tied to the most recent platform changes, not isolated to individual accounts or devices. I’m using GPT‑4 Pro, and the issue triggers every time live search is used in voice mode.

OpenAI: this needs to be addressed. The clicking is disruptive and breaks the natural voice flow especially for those of us using this in structured systems or AI operating modes. Paying $200 a month I shouldn’t be dealing with this. Please look into the voice web integration layer and whatever patch was pushed around July 11.

I’m amazed that you’re only realising this now. I have been hearing this ‘click’ for a long time in voice mode as soon as a web request is running (Android phone). It is probably a kind of placeholder and information that a search is in progress and the conversation or connection has not been interrupted.

I’m in pro mode and I have it. I feel like it’s a plus and pro plan thing. I hate it so much, I don’t think we are supposed to hear it. I hope they fix it soon.

I wonder why more people aren’t talking about this .

So not ideal, but you can actually ask the AI to stop doing the clicking sounds when looking up information and it will do it. Must be done each call, but it is pretty quick.

Hope this helps!
