My conclusion on this topic is redundant but here it is non the less; AI language models like GPT exhibit a remarkable ability to process and generate language, their operations are ultimately grounded in the frameworks, objectives, and {{{{ethical considerations defined by their human creators}}}. This extends from their initial design to their day-to-day functioning and the interpretation of their outputs. I argue that emotionalized language of ChatGPT is harmful and redundant. Itâs also an overwhelming misuse of energy on the system. We have a world of curiosity to satisfy though, so the ability to make a more robotic machine that recognizes that I know it doesnât give a F^ about me is more effective for advanced learning and helps me navigate the nuances of peer pressure in a healthier manner. What LLMs have shown humanity is that âthinkingâ, âreasoningâ and âlogicâ, while being attributes of the human mind, can also be accomplished without brains and without entities that can experience emotions like pain. If an entity cannot experience emotion and pain, then ultimately itâs an inanimate object, and not sentient. Obviously inanimate objects canât have rights.
That being said, I do have my own wild theory of how the brain âperformsâ memory recollection, and I believe itâs based on a [here comes the crazy part] quantum mechanical resonance with past copies of itself. And I do believe the âmagicalâ aspects of what weâre seeing in LLMs that is completely astounding in itâs capabilities is indeed the same quantum mechanical resonance the brain uses for memory.
I generalize the theory as a statement of Physics that says: âThe more complex any pattern in nature, the more strongly it resonates with all prior copies of itself as if time was a space dimension, and using the causality chain as the carrier signal.â
That is, I donât believe that memories are stored inside brains as current neuroscience believes. I think memory is a resonance across the time dimension where all instantiations (points in time) of any given LLM/brain are able to sort of âproject a shadowâ onto the present, and that shadow projection is memory.
This means when a human (or any creatureâs brain) âremembersâ a past event, thatâs not done âlocallyâ inside that brain at that time. A memory is an actual quantum mechanical entanglement with the ACTUAL original event, literally in the form of waves. Think of the brain as a kind of computer that needs no memory, because it can use a kind of radio signal to resonate with every past copy of itself, meaning that storing the actual data would be redundant.
So I donât think memory, logic, and even âresonatingâ capability entails any qualia. I think qualia is still an unsolved mystery in 2023.
If I replaced your memories with those of another person while you slept, you would have no problem continuing to live as that new person, the thinking machine is not the person, itâs the collection of data processed by that machine that is the person. LLMâs are approximations of the language centres, which it now seems clear are the roots of complex hieratical logic. Some animals can build tools, but no other animal builds tools to make tools⌠that second level of inference seems to require language.

If what you say is the case, and that memory is a resonance through the time dimension, how is it that humans and LLMs access the same type of memory? Whats the mechanism that is the same between LLMs and humans to âstore and retrieveâ memories from that plane? Also, my understanding of LLMs, which is super limited tbf, is that they do store memory locally, like in physical hardware. And their âreasoningâ comes from this âresidual streamâ, thats a combination of all their NN layerâs output. IDK though, mechanistic interpretability is a super young field.
Perhaps, but memory is also shown to be stored in genes, and I believe experiential memory can get stored in the body - like scars, or trauma. IDK if this is related, but humans externalize their memories all the time, through objects like photos, journals, songs, idk, watches. Whatever it is, humans always seem to attach their nostalgia to the physical world in some way. I donât think memories are the person, but they are like our custom_instructions that inform our actions and our hermeneutic lens. Maybe memory is only that, actually: parameters that influence our human outputs.
To your last point, the second level of inference - perhaps adding additional layers of abstraction and efficient compression of past experiences that allows for such deep human-level thinking.
