Astra orchestration is broken: gets stuck in loops instead of delegating to workers

Astra Orchestration Loop

Environment

  • Surface: Codex / Work — iOS app
  • Model: Astra
  • Plan: ChatGPT Pro, personal workspace
  • App version: Not confirmed for this report

Bug

Astra’s orchestration gets stuck in a repeating loop instead of advancing the task. This happens even when subagents are created—it is not simply a failure to spawn workers or select a particular worker model.

Expected behavior: Astra delegates bounded assignments, waits for meaningful results, integrates completed work and progresses toward completion. If something prevents progress, it identifies the blocker rather than repeatedly cycling through orchestration.

Actual behavior: In the affected runs, Astra repeatedly revisits coordination and monitoring without meaningful task progress. Having subagents present does not prevent the loop. The overall workflow remains stuck rather than progressing through delegated work, integration and completion.

My allowance was unexpectedly depleted during these runs. The technical issue being reported here is the repeated orchestration without progress; whether it caused the excessive consumption also needs investigation.

Reproduction

The affected workflow is:

  1. Start an Astra session with a project requiring multiple implementation and testing steps.
  2. Instruct Astra to delegate independent assignments to subagents and complete the overall task.
  3. Allow execution to continue after subagents are created.
  4. Observe whether orchestration advances based on worker results or repeatedly cycles through coordination without advancing the task.

Example of the relevant instructions:

Complete this project task using subagents for independent assignments.

Give each subagent a concrete deliverable and acceptance checks.
While workers run, wait for meaningful results or actionable blockers
rather than repeatedly checking unchanged state.

Integrate completed work, verify the outcome and continue until done.
If progress is blocked, identify the specific blocker.

These steps describe the affected workflow, not a confirmed deterministic minimal reproduction. The exact trigger for entering the loop has not yet been isolated.

Diagnostics

Related Support cases: #14779846 and #14859095.

Support has received the account evidence and confirmed that the three disputed banked resets were used, not expired. Those records establish the redemptions, not the technical cause of the usage depletion.

Please investigate why Astra continues cycling through orchestration even with subagents present, and whether repeated activity without task progress is contributing to unexpected usage consumption.

You posted this in the appropriate place on the forum for discussing and documenting a Codex bug. The forum, however, is not the official issue tracker. If the problem needs to be formally reported and tracked by the Codex maintainers, the official place is the OpenAI Codex GitHub issue tracker.

Thanks for following the posting requirements for the Codex Bugs subcategory:

I asked ChatGPT to search for the closest related issue, and it identified:

The noted issue has many links to related issues, often these are worth reading.

If that issue describes the same problem you are experiencing, consider adding a :+1: reaction to the GitHub issue itself, rather than only reacting to this forum topic. GitHub reactions can help the maintainers gauge how many users are affected.

If it does not match your problem closely enough, search the existing Codex issues for a better match. If you cannot find one, consider opening a new issue and include as much relevant information as possible, such as your Codex version, operating system, environment, reproduction steps, expected behavior, actual behavior, and any relevant logs or error messages.

Why are codex getting an AI to reply to my post? Do they not have any humans anymore

I can’t tell you how to do it with out giving away IP. Is that a human enough reply?

I know how to do it. Just took me 3 banked resets to fix it. I dont need your IP when mine is better.

firstly I have no idea why your reply was hidden. below is it

Thanks — I suspect it involves the interaction between the orchestrator and the subagents, rather than just subagent creation. Subagents can be created, but the overall workflow still gets stuck cycling through coordination instead of making meaningful progress.

The affected workflow involves multi-step implementation, testing and review. I haven’t isolated whether task length, task type or the number of handoffs triggers it, so I can’t yet say it is exclusive to longer projects.

What needs investigating is whether the subagents themselves stall, Astra fails to recognise or act on their results, or the coordination between them breaks down. I don’t have enough runtime evidence to distinguish those possibilities yet.

So yes, an orchestration-state issue is plausible, but I wouldn’t rule out the subagent execution/handoff side. Successfully creating workers doesn’t establish that the rest of the delegated workflow is functioning correctly.

Quick ask: can someone restore **3 banked resets** to my ChatGPT Pro account?

I’ve been going back and forth with Support for almost 2 weeks with no resolution. I burned the resets working around the Astra orchestration loop in this thread (Codex/Work on iOS — Astra keeps looping instead of delegating to workers). Retries fixed the work, but the resets were spent on a product bug, not user error.

Happy to share my Support ticket ID / account email privately if that helps escalate. Just want the 3 banked resets put back.

Thanks.

Heh. I’m not the one that had to ask.

I am pretty sure I didnt tag you? Haha. My bad if I did
