Are developers unknowingly using inferior language models?

I’m a programmer.

As a programmer, the accuracy of models in programming is paramount. When fixing issues or generating code snippets, even small mistakes can cause entire model generations to become obsolete.

That’s exactly why I’ve been using Plus – I need reliability and power. And I have found great success in GPT 5.1’s programming ability.

But Recently, I’ve spotted the scam.

And that scam has been affecting me severely. Maybe it’s a chat message that’s a little too basic. Or maybe generated code snippets stop working entirely. I’ve noticed that – despite the platform claiming I’m accessing the flagship 5.1 model – I’m actually being given the inferior GPT 4o.
I would understand usage limits, but this is a blatant scam. There’s no user transparency at all.

I’m just… locked out.

Because here’s the truth:

GPT 4.0o CANNOT program.

Well, yes, technically. But no. It never hits the mark. Unless I’m asking for something simple: A UI change, a simple call, anything as complex as an SAT math problem stumps the model. Meanwhile, GPT 5.1 can handle multiple files; the difference is noticeable and catastrophic as a developer.

Bug or Scam?

I want to hear your thoughts on this issue. Has anyone else been noticing that they’ve been silently transferred to an inferior model without their knowledge? What are the implications of OpenAI’s lack of transparency for users? Let me know by replying below.

No. We use the GPT 5.1 API and, so far, are pleased with the results.

We never, ever, ever use ChatGPT…

If I’ve paid for ChatGPT Plus, can I access GPT 5.1 for programming via the API?

When you say ‘their API,’ are you referring to using it for professional purposes (such as a role-playing bot on your company’s app) or for software development?

Also I tried using a GPT and it seems like it’s still just accessing basic 4.0o.

I know nothing about the various ChatGPT subscriptions.

are you referring to using it for professional purposes?

Yes

(such as a role-playing bot on your company’s app)

Absolutely not - a role-playing bot? Are you kidding?

or for software development?

Yes.

Unlike ChapGPT, we have complete control over the UI (for inputs) as well as control (somewhat) over output formats (i.e., HTML, plain text, Rich Text, etc.). As such, we have control over all our use cases.

Also I tried using a GPT and it seems like it’s still just accessing basic 4.0o.

If you are refering to the API, have you considered that you maybe need some help?

The reason I mentioned a roleplaying bot is because I honestly have no idea what ChatGPT could be used for professionally outside of that. ChatGPT doesn’t really have a valid use that can’t be solved through their website.

If you’re generating content for a business, doesn’t it make sense to just access ChatGPT through the official interface rather than paying per message?

Like if you’re using it to send emails to clients automatically it would be better to just use a copy and pasted format since ChatGPT messages must be manually reviewed for sneaky em dashes and bullet points. The only purpose would be something like a roleplaying bot

It appears that you are stuck in a myopic world of ChatGPT and cannot see the vast world of business (and non-business) use cases and implementations outside of it.

I truly hope that, one day, you will see and appreciate the possibilities.

I’m not going to discuss this any further because this thread is shutting down in a few hours for obvious reasons.

Good Luck
