I’m a ChatGPT Plus subscriber and a software developer building a personal AI application in C# using Microsoft Agent Framework.
I’m designing the application specifically to avoid vendor lock-in. Its core capabilities will be exposed through MCP so that different AI clients and agents can use them. For example, my Personal Knowledge Vault could expose tools such as search_documents, get_document, and get_metadata.
What surprised me is that I can connect this type of personal MCP server to other AI products at relatively modest subscription levels, but I cannot simply connect it to ChatGPT Plus.
This feels like an artificial barrier for exactly the kind of developer who should be encouraged to extend ChatGPT.
I don’t need OpenAI to host my agent or my data. I don’t need an enterprise integration platform. I simply want to authorize ChatGPT to communicate with an MCP endpoint that I own.
Ideally, a Plus user could:
-
Register a remote MCP server or other standards-based agent endpoint.
-
Authenticate ChatGPT to it using OAuth or another secure mechanism.
-
Select which tools/capabilities ChatGPT is allowed to use.
-
Have ChatGPT discover and invoke those tools during an ordinary conversation.
-
Explicitly approve sensitive or state-changing operations when appropriate.
I’d also like this capability to work with ChatGPT’s agent functionality. If I build an agent using Microsoft Agent Framework, or another standards-compatible framework, ChatGPT should ideally be able to interact with it through open protocols rather than requiring the agent to be rebuilt as an OpenAI-specific integration.
The important point isn’t just MCP. It’s interoperability.
Developers are increasingly building agents and tools that can be consumed by multiple AI systems. ChatGPT should be one of the easiest clients to connect to those systems, especially for technically sophisticated Plus subscribers experimenting with personal agents.
Please consider bringing authenticated custom MCP/agent connectivity to ChatGPT Plus.
