Dear OpenAI Team,
I’ve noticed a limitation in ChatGPT’s ability to handle tasks that take time, and I believe it stems from its dependency on user input before it can send a response. This restriction creates a feedback loop where the AI is unable to autonomously send results once they’re ready, even when it’s fully capable of doing so.
This issue becomes especially apparent in cases where ChatGPT is processing longer tasks, such as generating detailed documents, running calculations, or handling iterative work. Since the AI isn’t able to proactively send its output, it essentially gets stuck waiting for further user input—even when the task is complete. This creates an artificial bottleneck, limiting its true potential.
Beyond this, I’ve also noticed a few additional issues tied to this limitation:

Multi-Step Tasks Getting Stuck – If ChatGPT needs to process something in the background (such as refining a document or executing code), it cannot push the result once it’s ready. This can lead to moments where the user assumes the AI forgot, when in reality, it’s just waiting for another prompt.

Interrupted Responses – When responses take longer to generate, there’s a risk of them getting cut off. If ChatGPT had a way to reattempt sending its response autonomously, it would improve reliability.

Lack of Iterative Autonomy – ChatGPT can only refine or rework something if the user explicitly asks. If it could track and refine its own outputs (within reasonable constraints), it would remove some of the burden from the user and enhance the quality of interactions.
I believe these limitations are holding back ChatGPT’s ability to function at its full potential. Would it be possible to address these issues in future updates?
