I’d like ChatGPT to support temporary side chats inside an existing conversation, similar to Codex’s /side or /btw functionality.
When I’m reading a long response, I often have small clarification questions that I don’t want to permanently add to the main conversation or affect its context.
Ideally, I could select part of a response or open a small side panel, ask a few questions, and then close it and continue the original conversation exactly where I left off.
This would be especially useful for long technical, educational, and research conversations. Conversation branching is useful, but it feels much heavier than what I’m looking for. I want a lightweight, temporary side conversation that does not alter the main thread.
It would also be especially useful on mobile, where opening multiple browser tabs or windows is less convenient.
