Hello OpenAI Support,
I would like to request global on/off settings for Canvas and writing blocks in ChatGPT.
I have repeatedly specified in both Custom Instructions and Memory that I do not want Canvas or writing blocks to be used unless I explicitly request them. However, ChatGPT still automatically uses these formats, especially when I ask for long-form writing, fiction, rewriting, or other text-based work.
This is very frustrating because I prefer all responses to remain in the normal chat interface. Even when my instructions clearly say “Do not use Canvas” and “Do not use writing blocks,” those preferences are sometimes overridden by automatic formatting behavior.
Please consider adding separate account-level toggles for:
-
Automatically opening Canvas
-
Using writing blocks or special writing-format containers
-
Allowing these features only when the user explicitly requests them
When these settings are turned off, ChatGPT should always respond in the normal chat body, regardless of the length or type of writing request. Custom Instructions and saved Memory should also be respected instead of being overridden by automatic interface decisions.
This would be especially useful for users who write long fiction, edit manuscripts, or prefer a consistent plain-chat workflow. A feature should not be forced on users who have repeatedly stated that they do not want it.
Thank you for considering this request.
