Add Folders or Groups for Organizing ChatGPT Conversations

I would like to suggest adding folders, groups, or categories to the conversation list in both the ChatGPT web version and mobile app.

As users create more conversations over time, the sidebar can become crowded and difficult to manage. Work-related conversations, personal discussions, coding questions, travel planning, and other topics are currently mixed together in one long list.

It would be helpful if users could create custom groups such as:

  • Work
  • Personal
  • Coding
  • Learning
  • Travel
  • Archived Projects

Users could then move conversations into these groups, rename the groups, reorder them, and optionally collapse or expand each group.

Ideally, these groups should sync across the web version and mobile apps. Additional features such as assigning colors, automatically grouping conversations by topic, or allowing a conversation to appear in more than one group could also be useful.

This feature would make the conversation history easier to navigate, reduce clutter in the sidebar, and help users treat ChatGPT as a more organized long-term workspace.

Hey @wangshiwu, welcome to the community!

I can see how custom folders or groups would make the conversation history much easier to manage, especially when chats from work, personal projects, learning, travel, and other topics begin piling up in the same sidebar.

Projects already provide one way to keep related chats together, but the broader organization system you described including collapsible groups, custom ordering, colors, automatic sorting, and cross-device syncing would offer more flexibility for managing a large conversation history.

I can’t promise or share a timeline for changes like this, but I’ll pass your feedback along internally.
