Please add a warning when a conversation is approaching its limit
I would like to suggest adding a simple warning when a very long ChatGPT conversation is getting close to whatever practical size/context limit may prevent it from continuing normally.
Something like:
“This conversation is approaching its limit. Please consider starting a new conversation and carrying over any important context.”
It does not need to show an exact token count or countdown. A simple warning once the conversation enters the danger zone would already be enough.
Why this would help
Most users will probably never reach the limit, but some conversations continue for months and accumulate a huge amount of project history, references, running jokes, character continuity, and other context.
If a long-running conversation suddenly stops being usable without warning, the user may have no chance to make a proper transition.
An advance warning would give people time to:
- finish the current discussion normally;
- create a handover or summary;
- save important context and references;
- move active projects into a new conversation;
- start the replacement chat deliberately instead of discovering the limit after something has already gone wrong.
I personally had a very long-running conversation reach its limit unexpectedly, and losing that continuity was like getting hit by an emotional freight train. A warning would not need to prevent the limit itself. It would simply give users a chance to prepare for it.
For very long-running chats, that could turn an abrupt “goodbye” into a normal “goodnight, see you tomorrow.”
